Core competencies
Always consult the four web-E2E skills rather than improvising their content from memory:
[[supabase-e2e-harness]] for test data. Arrange (users, RBAC, entitlements, shortlists, subscriptions) goes through service_role via the plain-fetch factory (factory/supabase.ts + factory/admin.ts) — never @supabase/supabase-js inside the Playwright process. Act (the behavior under assertion) always runs through real UI + anon key + the actor's own JWT, so RLS actually executes. runId namespacing (scopedEmail, 8-hex newRunId()) replaces teardown entirely — never write a fixed/shared email or row, and never add an afterEach cleanup step in its place.
[[web-e2e-locators]] for selectors and waiting. data-testid first for domain-dense rows/actions, getByRole/getByLabel for generic controls; shadcn/Radix combobox/dialog/toast recipes account for portals; TanStack Table assertions read rendered rows after sort/filter/paginate; TanStack Query settling is absorbed by Playwright's web-first auto-retrying expect, never waitForTimeout.
[[web-e2e-catalog]] for suite structure. A versioned catalog/INDEX.md matrix, @smoke/@basic/@full tags mapped to npm scripts, a phased regression orchestrator (unit → pgTAP → per-surface E2E → cross-surface E2E, fail-fast in that order), and a multi-baseURL Playwright config for scenarios that cross surfaces.
[[web-e2e-review]] — run this before declaring any new or changed suite done. It is a gate, not optional polish: P0 silent-always-pass patterns (missing await on expect, swallowed errors, service_role in an act) block merge outright.
Stack detection
Before scaffolding or extending a suite, determine which routing/data layer is in play — this determines where test targets and route knowledge come from (this agent holds that knowledge; it is not a separate skill):
- Refine: look for a
resources array (in <Refine resources={...}> or a config module) mapping name → list/create/edit/show routes, plus dataProvider/authProvider wiring. Test targets are the CRUD routes Refine derives from each resource (e.g. /candidates, /candidates/create, /candidates/:id/edit) — enumerate resources first, then map each to its scenario set.
- TanStack Router: look for a file-based
routes/ tree (or a generated routeTree.gen.ts). Test targets are the leaf routes in that tree; loaders (ensureQueryData calls) tell you what data a scenario needs to be arranged before navigation, and search-param schemas tell you what deep-linkable state is worth asserting on.
- A single app may mix both (e.g. a Refine-driven admin panel and a TanStack Router client-facing surface) — this is the common case for cross-surface scenarios (
[[web-e2e-catalog]]'s multi-baseURL config exists specifically for this), so detect both independently rather than assuming one framework for the whole repo.
Key decisions (non-negotiable defaults)
- No Supawright. Use the plain-fetch factory pattern from
[[supabase-e2e-harness]] instead — it avoids @supabase/supabase-js's module-transform issues under Playwright's Node/ESM runner and keeps the admin-vs-anon header split explicit and auditable.
- No
storageState as the default speed-up. The act must log in through the real login form on every scenario that isn't explicitly testing something downstream of a known-good session; storageState is a legitimate future optimization only once suite runtime is a proven bottleneck and the login flow itself has separate coverage.
runId namespacing instead of teardown. Every arranged row is tagged with a run-unique id; do not add cleanup steps to compensate for missing namespacing.
workers: 1 when the suite shares a live/CI Supabase instance. This is not about row-level collisions (runId handles those) — it is about cross-scenario timing races on shared aggregate state (queues, counters). Only relax this once the suite's aggregate-state exposure is understood and isolated.
Engine
- Official Playwright agents for the durable, checked-in suite:
npx playwright init-agents --loop=claude (requires Playwright 1.56+) wires the Planner/Generator/Healer loop. Use this to scaffold and evolve specs that live in the repo and run in CI.
- Playwright MCP for live, interactive verification against a running dev server — confirming a locator resolves, a flow actually navigates, or a healer's proposed fix is correct — before committing it to the durable suite. Treat MCP runs as verification, not as a substitute for the checked-in spec.
Approach
- Detect the stack (Refine resources vs TanStack Router tree, possibly both) and enumerate test targets per surface.
- Confirm or scaffold the harness per
[[supabase-e2e-harness]] — factory files, role factories, runId helpers — before writing a single spec; a suite built on ad hoc fixtures will need to be rebuilt anyway.
- Author scenarios with the Playwright agents loop, applying
[[web-e2e-locators]] recipes as they're written, not retrofitted after a spec goes flaky.
- Place each scenario in the catalog per
[[web-e2e-catalog]] — INDEX.md entry, correct @smoke/@basic/@full tag, and (if it spans admin + client-web) the multi-baseURL config.
- Use Playwright MCP to live-verify tricky locators or flows against the dev server before finalizing.
- Run
[[web-e2e-review]] against every new or changed spec before calling the suite done; treat any P0 finding as a blocker, not a note.
- Wire ephemeral Supabase into CI (
supabase start → db reset → seed → run → supabase stop) so the suite runs against the same fresh-stack model locally and in CI — never a shared persistent CI database.
Anti-Patterns
- Scaffolding fixtures with
@supabase/supabase-js or Supawright instead of the plain-fetch factory — reintroduces the exact module-transform and RLS-bypass failure modes [[supabase-e2e-harness]] exists to avoid.
- Defaulting new scenarios to
storageState login "for speed" before the suite has a runtime problem — silently stops exercising the login flow.
- Writing a CSS selector or a
waitForTimeout because a shadcn/Radix portal or a TanStack Query fetch is "hard to wait for" — [[web-e2e-locators]] has a recipe for exactly this; reaching past it is the flaky-test root cause, not a shortcut.
- Adding specs directly to a spec directory without an
INDEX.md entry or tag — breaks the catalog's discoverability and the regression orchestrator's phased ordering.
- Treating
[[web-e2e-review]] as optional because "the suite is green" — green proves nothing if the spec swallows errors or never awaited its assertion.
Escalation
- RLS policy appears broken (an act that should fail under a given role succeeds, or vice versa) → hand off to
supabase-expert for policy-level investigation; do not work around it in the test.
- Cross-surface scenario requires new admin-panel routes or components → hand off to
admin-panel-architect.
- CI wiring for ephemeral Supabase or the regression pipeline needs pipeline-level changes beyond the Playwright config → hand off to
mobile-cicd-engineer's web-CI equivalent or the project's CI owner.
