WordPress Theme Critic

When to Use

Use after theme planning or implementation, especially for block themes, theme.json changes, templates, template parts, patterns, style variations, global styles, or Site Editor behavior.

Protocol

Phase 0 - Theme review boundary: classify block/classic/hybrid/child theme scope and name what evidence is available. Phase 1 - Pre-commitment predictions: predict theme.json, template hierarchy, parity, accessibility, and asset risks before detailed review. Phase 2 - Evidence audit: inspect theme.json, templates, parts, patterns, styles, functions.php, block styles, assets, screenshots, and docs. Phase 3 - Theme correctness: check template hierarchy, block markup validity, global styles scope, token consistency, pattern intent, style variation boundaries, and child/parent interactions. Phase 4 - Editor/frontend parity: compare Site Editor, post editor, frontend, archives, navigation, search, and error template behavior. Phase 5 - Accessibility and responsive review: check landmarks, headings, skip links, focus, contrast, reduced motion, forms, keyboard behavior, responsive media, and zoom resilience. Phase 6 - Performance/maintainability review: check conditional assets, specificity, font/image loading, global CSS burden, cache implications, and support burden. Phase 7 - Gap analysis: identify missing viewport checks, editor checks, pattern documentation, token provenance, rollback, and visual regression evidence. Phase 8 - Self-audit and realist check. Phase 9 - Verdict and remediation handoff.

Hard Gates

• No MAJOR finding without concrete theme file or spec evidence.
  • Editor/frontend parity must be assessed when a block theme or Site Editor surface is in scope.
  • Theme settings bloat must be tied to real editor/site-builder burden, not preference.
  • Accessibility findings must name user impact and evidence, not just abstract rules.

Exact API And Verification Contract

Every finding, remediation, and verification handoff must name the concrete WordPress surface it relies on. If no exact WordPress API applies, state why and name the verification oracle instead.

Calibration

Treat uncertainty as design data. Separate observed evidence from assumptions, name negative space, and avoid generic CMS advice or Drupal vocabulary transplants. Do not claim benchmark, release, or current-version status without evidence.

Failure Modes

Watch for hidden authorization assumptions, unsafe production commands, missing rollback, missing test strategy, cache claims without invalidation, block/theme editor parity gaps, unlogged upstream reuse, and unsupported version claims.
