Procedural Workflow

1. Scope behavior: read target + nearest existing harness (conftest, test utils, *.test.* patterns); name the contract under test.
2. Classify layer: unit (pure/isolated) vs integration (one boundary) vs e2e (user path); refuse mixed layers in one case.
3. Smallest repro first (smith): write/fix the minimal test that fails on the bug or missing edge before broadening.
4. Deterministic fixtures: factory or builder already in repo; pin clock (freezegun, jest.useFakeTimers), seed RNG, stub I/O at boundary—not deep mocks of internals.
5. Run scoped: pytest -q path::test -x, jest -t 'name' --runInBand, cargo test -p crate -- --exact name --nocapture, go test -run Name -count=1 ./pkg — prefer single-node selectors.
6. Triage reds once: on fail, fix test or code once from failure output; if environmental/order flake, root-cause shared mutable fixture before re-run.
7. Close: emit WIN block with commands and counts.

Constraints & Gotchas

• Implementation-coupled asserts (field order, exact error strings, private helpers) shatter on refactors without catching regressions.
• Module-scoped mutable fixtures and DB rows shared across cases → order-dependent flakes; prefer function-scoped + explicit setup/teardown.
• Unseeded random / raw datetime.now / UUID-in-assert without freeze → intermittent CI only.
• Network/DNS in unit tests → non-deterministic CI; mark and gate true integration separately.
• Over-mocking collaborators hides contract drift; mock only at process/network boundary.
• -count=1 / --runInBand matter: cached pass can mask flakes in Go/Jest.
• Do not use for product feature work, perf tuning, or non-test refactors (route /cat-test or /opgrok).

Anti-patterns

• Deleting or @skip/xtest failing cases to green CI without mandate
• time.sleep / arbitrary waits instead of condition/event sync
• Coverage % theater with no behavioral oracle
• Snapshot spam for logic that needs explicit asserts
• Retry wrappers or flaky-test quarantines as the “fix”
• Writing exploits, malware, or undisclosed destructive automation

Definition of Done

• Smallest behavior-proving test(s) match the brief under build unit.
• Scoped runner green: pytest -q / jest / cargo test -p / go test -count=1 evidence captured.
• No new non-determinism (time, RNG, network, shared mutables).
• WIN: PASS with concrete cmds, counts, and paths; WIN: FAIL only after one fix attempt + clear blocker.
• Downstream agents can consume without re-deriving intent.
