3. CHECK THE LOGICAL STRUCTURE
Do the premises, if true, actually support the conclusion?
Is the reasoning valid (does the conclusion follow)?
4. CHECK THE PREMISES

Are any premises hidden or assumed without justification?
5. IDENTIFY FALLACIES

8. RATE ARGUMENT STRENGTH
Strong: Valid structure + true premises + good evidence
Moderate: Reasonable but with gaps or minor fallacies

FALLACIES OF RELEVANCE

These fallacies offer reasons that seem relevant but are not.
AD HOMINEM (Attack the person)
Form: "Person X has [flaw], therefore X's argument is wrong."
Example: "You can't trust his climate analysis -- he's not even
a scientist." (Address the argument, not the person.)
Note: Questioning qualifications CAN be legitimate when expertise
is the basis of the claim, but it doesn't refute the argument itself.
APPEAL TO AUTHORITY (Argumentum ad verecundiam)
Form: "Expert X says Y, therefore Y is true."
Fallacious when: The authority is outside their field, unnamed, or
there is significant expert disagreement on the topic.
Legitimate when: Citing relevant experts as supporting evidence
(not as proof) within their area of expertise.
APPEAL TO POPULARITY (Argumentum ad populum)
Form: "Many people believe X, therefore X is true."
Example: "Millions of people use this product, so it must work."
Reality: Popularity is not evidence of truth or efficacy.
APPEAL TO EMOTION
Form: Using fear, pity, anger, or pride instead of evidence.
Example: "Think of the children!" (without explaining HOW children
are affected or providing evidence)
Note: Emotional appeals are not always fallacious -- they become
fallacious when they REPLACE evidence rather than accompany it.
APPEAL TO TRADITION
Form: "We've always done it this way, so it must be right."
Example: "This is how our company has operated for 50 years."
Reality: Longevity does not equal correctness.
APPEAL TO NATURE
Form: "X is natural, therefore X is good/right."
Example: "This supplement is all-natural, so it must be safe."
Reality: Natural things can be harmful; synthetic things can be beneficial.
RED HERRING
Form: Introducing an irrelevant topic to divert attention.
Example: "Why worry about budget deficits when there are people starving?"
Detection: Ask "Does this point directly address the original claim?"
TU QUOQUE (You do it too)
Form: "You do the same thing, so you can't criticize me."
Example: "You speed too, so don't lecture me about traffic safety."
Reality: Hypocrisy does not invalidate an argument.
STRAW MAN
Form: Misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack.
Example: "You want some gun regulation? So you want to ban ALL guns?"
Detection: Compare the restatement to the original claim. Is it accurate?
GENETIC FALLACY
Form: Judging an argument by its origin rather than its content.
Example: "That idea came from a discredited organization, so it's wrong."
Reality: Even flawed sources can produce valid arguments.

FALLACIES OF PRESUMPTION

FALSE DILEMMA (Either/Or)
Form: Presenting only two options when more exist.
Example: "You're either with us or against us."
Fix: Identify the excluded middle options.
BEGGING THE QUESTION (Circular reasoning)
Form: The conclusion is assumed in the premises.
Example: "The Bible is true because it's the word of God,
and we know it's the word of God because the Bible says so."
Detection: Check if any premise restates the conclusion in different words.
HASTY GENERALIZATION
Form: Drawing a broad conclusion from too few examples.
Example: "I met two rude people from that city; everyone there is rude."
Fix: Ask "Is this sample size representative?"
SLIPPERY SLOPE
Form: Claiming one event will inevitably lead to extreme consequences.
Example: "If we allow X, next thing you know, Y and Z will happen."
Legitimate when: Each step is supported by evidence.
Fallacious when: The chain of consequences is assumed without evidence.
FALSE CAUSE (Post hoc ergo propter hoc)
Form: "X happened before Y, therefore X caused Y."
Example: "I wore my lucky shirt and we won the game."
Reality: Correlation and sequence are not causation.
LOADED QUESTION
Form: A question that presupposes something unproven.
Example: "When did you stop cheating on your taxes?"
(Presupposes you were cheating.)
EQUIVOCATION
Form: Using a word with two different meanings in the same argument.
Example: "The sign said 'fine for parking here,' so I parked -- it's fine."
Detection: Check if key terms shift meaning between premises and conclusion.
COMPOSITION / DIVISION
Composition: What is true of parts must be true of the whole.
Division: What is true of the whole must be true of each part.
Example: "Every player on this team is excellent, so the team is excellent."
(Excellent individuals don't guarantee excellent teamwork.)

FALLACIES OF WEAK EVIDENCE

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE
Form: Using a personal story as proof of a general claim.
Example: "My grandfather smoked and lived to 95, so smoking isn't that bad."
Reality: Individual cases don't supersede statistical evidence.
CHERRY PICKING
Form: Selecting only evidence that supports your view, ignoring the rest.
Example: Citing 3 studies that support a claim while ignoring 30 that don't.
Detection: Ask "Is this the full picture, or a selected subset?"
APPEAL TO IGNORANCE (Argumentum ad ignorantiam)
Form: "No one has proven X false, therefore X is true."
Example: "No one has proven aliens don't exist, so they must exist."
Reality: Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence (or presence).
BURDEN OF PROOF SHIFT
Form: Demanding others disprove your claim rather than proving it yourself.
Example: "Prove that this treatment doesn't work."
Rule: The person making the claim bears the burden of proof.
NO TRUE SCOTSMAN
Form: Redefining a group to exclude counterexamples.
Example: "No real programmer would use that language."
Detection: Is the definition being modified to protect the claim?
SURVIVORSHIP BIAS
Form: Drawing conclusions from visible successes while ignoring failures.
Example: "Dropouts like Bill Gates succeeded, so college is unnecessary."
Reality: We don't hear about the millions of dropouts who didn't succeed.
CONFIRMATION BIAS (cognitive, not strictly a fallacy)
Pattern: Seeking and interpreting information that confirms existing beliefs.
Mitigation: Actively seek disconfirming evidence. Ask "What would change my mind?"

CONSTRUCTING A SOUND ARGUMENT

6. STEELMAN the opposition.
