Framework Overview
What is TISAX?
TISAX (Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange) is the automotive industry standard for information security assessment. Developed by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and governed by the ENX Association, it provides a unified framework for assessing information security across the automotive supply chain.
The core idea: instead of each OEM auditing its suppliers individually, a single TISAX assessment is sufficient. Results are shared via the ENX platform — transparent, standardised, and efficient.
Why TISAX matters:
Mandatory for suppliers wanting to do business with participating automotive OEMs (BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and others)
Based on ISO/IEC 27001 but with automotive-specific requirements including prototype protection and availability
TISAX labels are valid for three years
Results shared via the ENX platform without re-assessment for each customer

AL1 — Self-Assessment
What it is: Pure self-disclosure using the VDA ISA questionnaire. No external verification. Results can be shared on the ENX platform but do NOT result in a TISAX label.
Who uses it: Primarily for internal purposes. Almost never accepted by OEM customers as proof of compliance.
Recommendation: Do not rely on AL1 if your OEM customer requires formal assurance. It has very limited value in the supply chain context.
What it is: Self-assessment PLUS independent verification by an accredited TISAX audit provider. Conducted remotely via phone or video interview and document review. Results in a TISAX label.
Typical duration: 1 to 3 days of auditor time remotely.

AL3 — On-Site Assessment (Very High Protection Requirements)
What it is: Everything in AL2 PLUS a full on-site audit. The auditor physically visits your location — walking the facility, inspecting server rooms and secure areas, checking physical access controls, and conducting in-person interviews with staff.
Typical duration: 2 to 5 days on-site depending on scope and number of locations.

Logistics providers transporting prototype vehicles or components
Photography and video production companies with access to unreleased vehicle models
AI and software development partners working on autonomous driving or ADAS systems
Test and validation laboratories handling safety-critical or crash test data

When OEMs require AL3: When you handle information classified as strictly confidential — typically prototype-related or safety-critical data where physical security controls must be verified in person.
Who Decides Your Assessment Level?
Your OEM customer decides — not you.
The OEM specifies the required assessment level and assessment objective in their supplier requirements, tender documents, or contract. You assess what data you will handle and confirm the appropriate level with your customer.
If multiple OEM customers require different levels:
AL3 covers everything AL2 covers. If one customer requires AL2 and another requires AL3, completing AL3 once satisfies both. You only need the higher level — there is no need to run separate assessments.
Practical tip: Many consultants recommend targeting AL3 directly even if AL2 currently suffices. This future-proofs your certification against rising OEM requirements and avoids the cost of a second assessment later.
