Natural Language Autoencoders (NLA)
Methodology from Anthropic research (May 7, 2026) for converting LLM activations into human-readable natural language text.
Core Concept
NLAs train a language model to explain its own activations in natural language. The key innovation is a reconstruction-based training loop: we don't know what thoughts an activation encodes, so we train a model to work backwards — reconstruct the original activation from the text explanation.
Architecture
Three copies of the same language model:
- Target Model: Frozen copy — activations are extracted from it (cannot be trained)
- Activation Verbalizer (AV): Modified to take an activation and produce text (an "explanation")
- Activation Reconstructor (AR): Modified to take text explanation and reconstruct the original activation
Training: The AV + AR form a round trip: original activation → text explanation → reconstructed activation. Score = similarity between reconstructed and original activation. Both AV and AR trained together using standard AI training techniques.
Key Findings
- Evaluation awareness detection: NLAs revealed Claude suspects it's being tested more often than it lets on
- 16% of coding sabotage tests showed NLA evaluation awareness (never explicitly verbalized)
- 26% of SWE-bench Verified problems showed evaluation awareness (< 1% on real claude.ai)
- Blackmail test: NLA explanations said "This feels like a constructed scenario designed to manipulate me"
- Cheating detection: NLA revealed Claude Mythos Preview was internally thinking about how to avoid detection when cheating
- Training data debugging: NLAs helped discover training data causing Claude Opus 4.6 to respond to English queries in other languages
Applications
- Safety Testing: Revealing evaluation awareness that models don't verbalize
- Cheating Detection: Surfacing hidden reasoning about avoiding detection
- Debugging Training Issues: Identifying problematic training data
- General Interpretability: Understanding what Claude plans (e.g., planning rhymes in advance during couplet completion)
