Identification
Confirms what a wild plant is before any harvest decision is made.
No harvest recommendation is worth acting on until the species is confirmed. Misidentification risk ranges from ineffective to fatal — and in between are plants that are toxic in one growth stage and edible in another, plants that are edible in one part and toxic in another, and plants that have dangerous lookalikes at the harvest stage.

Step 1 — Multiple diagnostic features.
Never rely on a single feature. Confirm at minimum:

The Honorable Harvest operates as a production management rule, not just an ethical principle: take no more than half the stand, and the stand replenishes. Take more, and it may not. Applied systematically, this protocol maintains and often improves wild plant productivity over time.
General harvest rules applicable to all species:
- Never take the first plant you find. It may be the only one, or it may be ahead of the main stand.
- Never take more than half the stand in a single visit. This is the production limit, not a soft guideline.
- Leave the largest, healthiest individuals to set seed. Selection pressure toward robust plants improves the stand over generations.
