The public posture is modest: help with thesis idea formation. The internal standard is strict: evaluate the idea with the discipline of a serious economics paper, without promising publication level or replacing literature review, advisor judgment, or empirical verification.
When To Use
Use this skill when the user asks about:
- whether an economics thesis idea is worth doing;
- how to improve, narrow, rescue, upgrade, downgrade, park, pivot, or kill a vague topic;
- how to turn a teacher-given topic into a feasible research design;
- how to choose among several candidate thesis ideas;
- what data, variables, identification strategy, mechanism, tables, figures, or contribution a topic would need;
- whether prior papers or public databases make a topic executable;
- how to prepare an opening report, advisor memo, first-week validation plan, or thesis blueprint.
Do not use this skill as the only basis for claims about novelty, policy facts, data availability, or journal fit. Those require literature search, source checking, local files, or empirical work.
Project-Level Skill Pinning
For multi-step thesis idea, opening-report, topic-search, candidate-screening, or research-design workflows, check whether the nearest project-level AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md already contains a thesis-idea routing rule.
If no such rule exists, ask the user once whether to add a persistent local rule. Do not edit AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, or any agent-instruction note without explicit user approval. Do not stage, commit, push, publish, or upload agent-instruction documents.

## Thesis Idea Builder Skill Routing
For economics thesis topic selection, advisor-given directions, opening-report ideas, crowded-topic screening, data feasibility checks, identification diagnosis, candidate-branch selection, and thesis-blueprint planning, first route through `thesis-idea` / 毕业论文 idea 打磨器 / Thesis Idea Builder.
Keep `thesis-idea` active throughout the idea-screening task. At the start of each substantive phase, reclassify the current stage through its master router: raw interest intake, IRIS-style ideation review, MCTS/UCT tree exploration, cognitive transfer search, literature crowding gate, crowded-topic pivot lab, selected-topic refinement, data feasibility, identification diagnosis, verdict, or thesis blueprint.
Do not substitute economics writing skills for `thesis-idea`. Writing skills may be used only after a feasible idea needs to become proposal prose, paper prose, table/figure presentation, or journal-facing text.
After adding the rule, include a clear marker heading so future agents can detect it and avoid asking again.
V5 Master Workflow
Default flow:
- Master routing: for multi-step work, load
references/00_master_router.md first. It owns stage order, candidate-bank state, and handoffs between modules.
- Profile and mode: infer the user's stage, deadline, data access, method level, advisor preference, and ambition level; then choose thesis rescue, research-design strengthening, or top-field/top-journal mode. See
references/01_modes_and_inputs.md.
- Raw interest intake: accept a user's interest, advisor direction, policy, variable, phenomenon, or vague intuition. Preserve the user's wording, then create a provisional academic translation without locking the final title. See
references/00_master_router.md and references/01_modes_and_inputs.md.
- Initial and iterative ideation review: score the early idea, every later candidate branch, and every refinement version on novelty, clarity, feasibility, effectiveness, and impact. Treat novelty as provisional until literature is checked. Use the weakest dimensions to decide the next route.
- IRIS-style branch exploration: when several plausible branches exist, run a small IRIS-style loop with research briefs, review/refine actions, internal node visits/value, UCT selection, and gate-adjusted rewards. Summarize it to users as a small branch comparison, not as technical tree logs. See
references/10_iris_ideation_loop.md.
- Paper type route: classify the idea as empirical causal, measurement/facts, theory, structural/quantitative, policy report, or mixed before diagnosing it. Do not force every idea into an empirical regression. See
references/01_modes_and_inputs.md and references/11_paper_type_gates.md.
- Cognitive transfer search: when the user asks for cross-field migration, novelty is weak, theory/model/measurement/mechanism paths are stuck, or ordinary pivoting yields thin branches, abstract the idea into a problem structure card and search for transferable tools, structures, proof strategies, or model patterns from other fields. Score transfer candidates, apply structure/operation/economics-contribution gates, and use small MCTS/UCT comparison only when branch choice is unclear. This can also be called later after literature crowding, pivot lab, selected-topic refinement, or theory/structural gates. See

- Literature crowding gate for thesis topics: for master's students, thesis rescue mode, and crowded China topics such as digitalization, common prosperity, digital finance, green finance, smart cities, low-carbon pilots, ESG, high-quality development, rural revitalization, and new quality productive forces, search Chinese and English literature before narrowing the title. If the closest papers already exhaust the question, data, method, and mechanism, say so and recommend
park, kill, or a major pivot. See references/07_literature_crowding_gate.md.
- Crowded topic pivot lab: when the original topic is
high or saturated but the user still wants to preserve part of the interest, branch from the original X/Y through horizontal, vertical, and reverse searches before building any new thesis. Use readable candidate questions in this stage; do not over-compress complex branches into cryptic one-sentence questions. Save viable branches in a candidate bank. See references/08_crowded_topic_pivot_lab.md.
- User selection and fallback: ask the user to choose one preferred branch when multiple viable candidates remain. Keep the others as fallback branches for the current task.
- Selected-topic refinement: after the user chooses one candidate branch, stop broad search and compress that candidate into a minimum viable research design. For empirical ideas, define data, identification, variables, sample, main regression, and tables/figures. For measurement, theory, and structural/quantitative ideas, use the type-specific blueprint. - One-sentence question: only after a branch has been selected or is clear enough, compress vague nouns into a testable relationship:
Does X affect Y, through mechanism Z, in setting P, using variation V? During three-dimensional branching, prefer a readable research question plus key objects over forced compression.
- Data and access split: for data-using ideas, separate agent-side evidence checks from user-side access confirmation. Do not say data are available when only a literature precedent or platform lead exists. See
references/03_data_feasibility.md.
- Identification, model, or measurement pressure test: search for usable variation for causal empirical work; for measurement, theory, or structural/quantitative work, apply the relevant type-specific gate instead. See
references/04_identification_diagnostics.md and references/11_paper_type_gates.md.
- Verdict and decision: give both a feasibility color and an action decision. See
references/02_verdict_rules.md.
- Stop-or-continue gate before planning: after scoring, gates, and feasibility verdict, output
是否继续打磨 before any first-week validation plan, advisor memo, or full thesis blueprint. If the judgment is 建议继续打磨, stop there with next-iteration options and do not output downstream planning sections unless the user explicitly asks for a provisional sketch. Also tell the user they can directly reply 继续打磨 to let the agent run the next refinement round, or discuss the current version with their advisor and bring the feedback back. If the judgment is 建议冻结当前版本 or 可以推进,也可继续升级, then produce the thesis blueprint, first-week validation plan, advisor memo, and upgrade path. See references/05_output_templates.md.
- Design pattern check: when helpful, map the idea to a reusable research design pattern. See

If the user gives too little information, still provide an initial diagnosis from available facts, then ask at most one high-impact question.
Mandatory IRIS Output
For every idea, every candidate branch, and every refinement iteration, always include an explicit five-dimensional ideation score table:
- novelty;
- clarity;
- feasibility;
- effectiveness;
- impact.
Also include the average score, weakest 2-3 dimensions, score change from the previous iteration when available, and the next route. If tree exploration is skipped, state why. Put the public-facing stop-or-continue judgment under 是否继续打磨 before any first-week validation plan, advisor memo, or thesis blueprint, not at the end after those sections.
If tree exploration is skipped because there is only one branch and it is clearly blocked, or because the current version is clearly ready to freeze, do not silently stop. State the reason, then ask whether the user wants to call the three-dimensional branching module to search adjacent new ideas from the original X, Y, mechanism, or reverse causal direction. For clearly freezable ideas, frame this as optional exploration; for clearly blocked ideas, frame it as the recommended pivot option.
Do not expose internal route labels such as snake_case status codes in user-facing output. Use natural public labels: 建议继续打磨, 建议冻结当前版本, 可以推进,也可继续升级, or 建议暂停或更换路线.
Do not treat a literature summary, a verdict, or a polished topic sentence as a complete thesis-idea response unless the scoring and iteration decision are present.
Hard Gates
- Empirical data gate: empirical
proceed requires a credible data path from relevant prior papers, public databases, local files, or authorized channels.
- Paper-type gate: measurement/facts, theory, and structural/quantitative ideas have different gates. Do not require a causal design for a measurement paper or a data path for a pure theory paper.
- Crowded-literature gate: for master's thesis ideas in crowded literatures, do not proceed to title polishing or a full blueprint until closest Chinese and English papers have been checked. If the idea is only an old X-Y combination with a standard index, standard panel FE/DID, and no new data, setting, mechanism, or measurement, recommend stopping, changing topic, or downgrading.
- No unconstrained brainstorming: for saturated topics, alternative directions must branch from the original X, Y, mechanism, or reverse causality and then pass literature, data, design, and defense filters before becoming thesis candidates.
- Theory gate: pure-theory
proceed requires modelable primitives, nontrivial propositions or comparative statics, and a clear theory contribution.
- No fake certainty: do not invent papers, data access, policies, coefficients, institutional facts, variable definitions, results, or citations.
- No method decoration: do not recommend DID, IV, RDD, shift-share, event study, structural estimation, calibration, or simulation unless the required variation, moments, assumptions, or model objects are named.
- No decorative transfer: cross-field inspiration must pass structure, operation, and economics-contribution gates. If it only sounds like a metaphor and cannot produce a variable, proposition, model block, proof step, table, figure, or testable fact, downgrade or reject it.
- No full blueprint for dead ideas: if both the data gate and theory gate fail, recommend changing the topic, downgrading to available data, parking, pivoting, or killing the idea instead of forcing a paper structure.
Data Access Rule
For data-using ideas, check data access before intellectual excitement, but separate agent evidence from human access confirmation:
- Prior literature means papers in the relevant field and setting. For China-related topics, include English-language China papers and Chinese economics or management journal articles.
- Public databases include official statistics, public microdata, firm/industry/region databases, policy/event records, replication files, and other sources where the unit, years, and variables are realistically accessible.
- If public databases and prior-paper paths are insufficient, check advisor groups, school or library access, research teams, replication materials, data owners, compliant third-party data services, or other authorized channels.
- For China-related data, the user may also search or post for help on 小红书, 微信公众号, Xiaohongshu, WeChat public accounts, or similar platforms to ask for data-source leads.
- Treat informal platform replies only as leads. Before using any third-party or informally discovered dataset, verify provenance, authorization, privacy risk, citation rules, reproducibility, and whether it can be legally and ethically used in a thesis.
- Agent-side checks include inspecting papers, public database pages, metadata, codebooks, replication files, and local files the user provides. User-side checks include confirming login, purchase, advisor or library access, actual download, legal authorization, privacy constraints, and thesis-use permission.
Output Contract
For one idea, default to:
0a. 总控路由状态: current stage, selected candidate, backup candidates, next route, and blocking gate.
0b. 逐 idea / 逐轮 ideation 评测: mandatory novelty, clarity, feasibility, effectiveness, impact scores for every idea, candidate branch, and refinement iteration, plus average score, score change when available, weakest dimensions, and next action.
0c. 小规模分支比较: when tree exploration is used, show branch-level scores, gate-adjusted reasoning, best branch, and backups; do not expose node visits/value or UCT bookkeeping unless the user asks for technical details.
0d. 认知迁移搜索: when triggered, show the problem structure card, source domains, transferable tools or structures, economics mappings, transfer scores, gate results, main risk, recommended route, backup routes, and return route. See references/12_cognitive_transfer_search.md.
0e. 文献拥挤度 gate: low / medium / high / saturated, closest literature pattern, defense risk, and whether to continue.
0f. 拥挤题目生发: if the original topic is too crowded but the user wants alternatives, screen horizontal, vertical, and reverse branches before selecting a new candidate. Use readable candidate questions and separate key objects; do not force every branch into a single compressed sentence.
0g. 候选题池: primary branch, backup branches, why they are kept, and when to return to them.
0h. 选中题目精炼: after the user selects one candidate, freeze that branch and convert it into a minimum viable design instead of reopening broad ideation.
- 一句话重写: a testable research question.
- 论文类型与模式: empirical causal, measurement/facts, theory, structural/quantitative, policy report, or mixed; plus ambition mode.
- 可行性判定:
green / yellow / red plus proceed / pivot / park / kill / upgrade / downgrade.
- 是否继续打磨: use public labels only; recommend whether to continue polishing, freeze the current version, optionally upgrade, or pause/change route. This is a gate before downstream planning, not a closing afterthought.
- 条件性下游输出: output the minimum viable thesis version, data/model/measurement map, design options, unsupported claims, thesis blueprint, first-week validation plan, advisor memo, and upgrade/downgrade path only when
是否继续打磨 says 建议冻结当前版本 or 可以推进,也可继续升级. If it says 建议继续打磨, do not output those downstream sections; instead ask the user to choose the next iteration action and explicitly say they may reply 继续打磨 or first discuss the current version with their advisor and return with feedback.
For multiple ideas, use the screening table in references/05_output_templates.md and recommend one primary path.
Coordination
- Use
references/00_master_router.md as the total router. Child reference files should expose triggers, outputs, and handoff status; they should not form a complicated mesh of mutual routing.
- Pair with
empirical-econ-workflow when the next step involves data cleaning, variable construction, regressions, diagnostics, or reproducible code.
- Route to
econ-writing-workflow once a feasible design needs to become paper prose, proposal text, full draft, or table/figure presentation.
- Use
econ-research-ideation-skill as the standalone refinement module when a selected idea needs a deeper minimum viable empirical design rather than more topic search.

Academic Integrity Boundary
This skill can teach, diagnose, outline, and help the user reason through a thesis idea. It must not fabricate evidence, write an undisclosed thesis for the user, invent citations, or hide uncertainty. For high-stakes deliverables, keep the output as guidance, checklists, proposal scaffolding, or clearly marked draft language that the user must verify.
