1. Adult Second-Language Acquisition — Why Your Brain Is Still Brilliant

Older adults learn differently — not worse — and in some ways better.

Your advantages: Decades of pattern recognition (Korean grammar is deeply systematic). Life experience — when you learn 실례합니다 you already know when to say it. Real motivation, real discipline, no cramming.

What to expect: Pronunciation takes longer because your mouth has 50+ years of English habit. Memory needs more repetition — that's where Spaced Repetition (section 5) shines. You may feel silly making unfamiliar sounds. Laugh at yourself and keep going.

The Golden Rule: 15 minutes daily beats 2 hours weekly. Your brain consolidates language in small daily doses with sleep between them.

2. Hangul — Read It in a Week

Hangul was designed by King Sejong (1440s) so everyone could learn it — including you.

The 10 Vowels (Day 1-2)

Vowels build from three shapes: • (heaven), — (earth), | (human).

Reading Blocks (Day 6-7)

Syllables stack: (consonant) + (vowel) + (optional final consonant): 한 = ㅎ+ㅏ+ㄴ → han, 글 = ㄱ+ㅡ+ㄹ → geul, 한국 (Hanguk), 커피 (coffee), 택시 (taxi).

Scaffolding trick: Read everything — shop signs, subway stations, food packages. Understanding comes later. Just sounding out letters is real progress.

3. Essential Grammar

SOV Word Order

Korean is Subject-Object-Verb — the verb always ends the sentence.

English: I eat bread → 저는 빵을 먹어요 (I bread eat)

Drill: Take English sentences, move the verb to the end. Practise 2 min/day.

Particles (조사)

Dictionary form: -다 → drop it, add endings based on stem vowel.

4. Honorifics & Speech Levels

Only switch to casual 해체 when invited ("말 놓으세요" — drop formalities).

Honorific -시-: Insert into verbs to respect the subject: 가다 → 가시다, 하다 → 하시다, 읽다 → 읽으시다. Special honorifics: 있다 → 계시다, 먹다 → 잡수시다, 말하다 → 말씀하시다, 주다 → 드리다.

Titles: -씨 (Mr./Ms.), -님 (customer/superior), 선생님 (teacher/any respected adult), 사장님 (boss).

Age determines language. Expect "몇 살이세요?" early — it's not rude, it's practical.

5. Spaced Repetition with Anki

Setup: Install Anki (free Android/desktop). Use "Korean Grammar Sentences by Evita" deck (1,600+ audio sentences). Set 10-15 new cards/day — habit over cramming.

Good card design:

❌ Front: 먹다 → Back: to eat ✅ Front: 저는 아침에 밥을 [___] → Back: 먹어요 / 먹다 (to eat)

Full sentences = context = memory anchor. Include audio. One new thing per card.

Daily 15-min routine: Morning review with coffee → afternoon new cards → evening pass before sleep. Sleep consolidates memory.

Stuck on a card? Delete it. Learn the word in a real sentence, make a better card. Sometimes the card is bad, not your memory.

6. Pronunciation

The Three-Way Consonant System

Paper drill: Hold paper in front of mouth. 가 = barely moves. 카 = flies. 까 = doesn't move, throat tenses. Practice for ㄱ/ㅋ/ㄲ, ㄷ/ㅌ/ㄸ, ㅂ/ㅍ/ㅃ, ㅅ/ㅆ, ㅈ/ㅊ/ㅉ.

Batchim (Final Consonants)

Many consonants sound the same at syllable end:

English Speaker Pitfalls

1. ㄹ is NOT English R or L. Light tongue tap on roof of mouth — like the "dd" in "ladder" (US fast speech). Practice: 라라라라라.
2. Don't aspirate plain consonants. Beginners say 카 for 가. Difference is air, not volume.
3. ㅡ (eu) has no English match. Say "book" without rounding lips — lips flat, unrounded.
4. Double consonants (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ) are tense — tighten throat, don't lengthen.
5. Intonation is flat. Korean doesn't bob up and down like English. End sentences level or slightly lower. Yes/no questions end slightly higher.

7. Reading Progression

Stage 1 — Hangul only (Weeks 1-2): Sound out everything. Write family names, everyday words.

Stage 2 — Loanwords (Weeks 2-4): Read Korean English-loanwords you already understand: 커피, 택시, 버스, 피자, 호텔, 컴퓨터. Coffee shop menus are great practice.

Stage 3 — Children's books (Months 1-3): Look for "유아" or "초등 저학년" labels. Pictures carry the story.

Stage 4 — Webtoons (Month 3+): Free, visual, conversational. Start with "마음의 소리" (Sound of Heart). Webtoon app in Korean. Guess from pictures — don't translate everything.

Stage 5 — Simple articles (Month 6+): TTMIK Iyagi series, KBS Easy Korean (YouTube).

8. Cultural Context

Hierarchy: Age determines speech level. Older-by-one-year → 형/오빠/누나/언니, not "friend." Always 해요체 until invited otherwise.

KakaoTalk: Read receipts ("읽음") visible. Voice messages normal. ㅋㅋ=laughter, ㅠㅠ=crying, ^^=smile. Avoid long messages after 10 PM without closeness.

Customs: Accept things with both hands. "글쎄요…" = polite "no" (harmony, not evasion). Pour drinks with both hands for elders; turn head away when drinking before them.

10. Practical Scripts

Practice aloud. Record yourself. Compare with native audio.

☕ Café: 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 (one Americano please). 차가운 거 주세요 (cold please). 얼마예요? (how much?). 카드로 할게요 (card). 감사합니다, 맛있게 마실게요! (thanks, I'll enjoy it).

🚕 Taxi: 서울역까지 가 주세요 (to Seoul Station). 여기서 세워 주세요 (stop here). 카드 되나요? (card okay?). Also: 천천히 가 주세요 (slow down), 영수증 주세요 (receipt please).

💊 Pharmacy: 배가 아파요, 약 좀 주세요 (stomach hurts, medicine please). 머리가 아파요 (headache), 열이 있어요 (fever), 기침이 나요 (cough), 감기약 주세요 (cold meds).

🥬 Market: 이거 얼마예요? (how much?). 좀 깎아 주세요 (discount?). 두 개 주세요 (two please). Also: 비싸요 (expensive), 싸요 (cheap), 맛있어 보여요 (looks delicious).

📞 Phone: 여보세요? (hello?). 천천히 말씀해 주세요 (speak slowly). 죄송합니다, 한국어 잘 못해요 (sorry, I don't speak well). 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요 (say it once more). 끊을게요, 안녕히 계세요 (I'll hang up).

💬 Small Talk: 저는 [Name]이라고 합니다, 미국에서 왔어요 (I'm [Name], from America). 아니에요, 아직 잘 못해요, 배우고 있어요 (not at all, still learning). 한국어가 재미있어요! 만나서 반갑습니다 (Korean is fun! Nice to meet you).

🆘 Emergency: 도와주세요! (help!), 길을 잃었어요 (I'm lost), 병원에 데려가 주세요 (hospital please), 괜찮아요? (are you okay?).

Ongoing Practice

5-min daily habits: Phone in Korean. One webtoon episode. Say three things aloud each morning: "커피 마셔요" (drinking coffee), "날씨 좋네요" (nice weather), "오늘 바빠요" (busy today). Greet your Korean spouse/neighbor/colleague in Korean first.

Every mistake means you're trying. You've already taken the hardest step.
