Skill Creator

A skill for creating new skills and iteratively improving them.

The Process

1. Understand what the user wants the skill to do
2. Interview to fill gaps — edge cases, formats, dependencies
3. Write the SKILL.md
4. Test it with a few realistic prompts
5. Improve based on what worked and what didn't
6. Optimize the description for triggering accuracy

Figure out where the user is in this process and help them from there. Maybe they want a skill from scratch. Maybe they already have a draft that needs improving. Maybe they just finished a workflow and want to capture it as a skill.

Capture Intent

The conversation might already contain a workflow the user wants to capture. If so, extract what you can — tools used, sequence of steps, corrections made, input/output formats — and confirm before proceeding.

Key questions to answer (from the conversation or by asking):

1. What should this skill enable the agent to do?
2. When should it trigger? What user phrases or contexts?
3. What's the expected output format?
4. Are there edge cases or failure modes to handle?

Interview and Research

Ask about edge cases, input/output formats, example files, success criteria, and dependencies. Check the codebase for existing patterns if relevant. Come prepared with context to reduce burden on the user.

Don't start writing until you understand the problem space well enough to generalize beyond the examples discussed.

Where Skills Live

Skills are managed via Nix. The source of truth is:

~/control/negz/nix/users/negz/opencode/skills/

Create, edit, and delete skills there. The files under ~/.config/opencode/skills/ are read-only — they're generated by Nix from the source above.

Writing the SKILL.md

Frontmatter

Required fields:

• name: Lowercase, hyphens, 1-64 chars. Must match the directory name.
• description: What the skill does AND when to use it. This is the primary triggering mechanism — all "when to use" info goes here, not in the body.

Optional fields:

• compatibility: Required tools or dependencies (e.g., "Requires Nix with flakes enabled", "Requires authenticated gh CLI").

Description Writing

The description determines whether the agent invokes the skill. Today's agents tend to undertrigger — they don't use skills when they should. Combat this by making descriptions a little pushy. Include specific keywords and contexts.

Bad:

description: Helps with PDFs.

Good:

description: Extract text and tables from PDF files, fill forms, and merge
  documents. Use when working with PDF files or when the user mentions PDFs,
  forms, or document extraction.

Body Structure

Keep the SKILL.md body under 500 lines. If approaching this limit, split detail into references/ files with clear pointers about when to read them.

Recommended sections:

1. When to Use — disambiguate from similar skills if needed
2. Instructions — the core workflow, step by step
3. Examples — concrete input/output pairs
4. Guidelines — principles, constraints, anti-patterns
5. Key Principles — a numbered summary at the end

Progressive Disclosure

Skills load in three levels:

1. Metadata (name + description) — always in context (~100 words)
2. SKILL.md body — loaded when the skill triggers (<500 lines)
3. Bundled resources — loaded on demand (unlimited size)

Use this to your advantage. Keep the main file focused on instructions. Move detailed reference material, large examples, and API docs into separate files:

For large reference files (>300 lines), include a table of contents.

Writing Patterns

Use imperative form in instructions. "Run the tests" not "You should run the tests."

Explain the why. Today's LLMs are smart. When given reasoning they can generalize beyond rote instructions. If you find yourself writing ALWAYS or NEVER in all caps, reframe — explain why the thing matters so the agent understands the intent, not just the rule.

Use **this skill** when creating new widgets.
Use **other-skill** when viewing or listing existing widgets.

What Makes a Good Skill

• Opinionated. Tell the agent exactly what to do. "Use cmp.Diff for all comparisons" not "You might want to consider using cmp.Diff."
• Generalizable. Don't overfit to specific examples. The skill will be used across many different prompts — write instructions that transfer.
• Lean. Remove anything that isn't pulling its weight. If the agent already knows how to do something, don't re-explain it. Focus on what it wouldn't know without the skill.
• Honest about scope. Include "Do Not" or "What Not to Do" sections. Knowing when NOT to apply a pattern is as valuable as knowing when to apply it.

What to Avoid

• Heavy-handed MUSTs. Explain reasoning instead of shouting.
• Overly narrow instructions that only work for the examples discussed. Generalize from the examples to the underlying principle.
• Redundant context. Don't tell the agent things it already knows (basic language syntax, common CLI flags, how to read files).
• Time-sensitive information. Avoid "if before August 2025, use the old API." Just document the current approach.

Testing the Skill

After writing or improving a skill, test it. Come up with 2-3 realistic prompts — the kind of thing a real user would actually say — and try them. Focus on:

• Does the skill trigger when it should?
• Does the agent follow the instructions correctly?
• Are the outputs what the user would expect?
• Do edge cases break anything?

Share the test prompts with the user before running them. They'll know better than you what realistic usage looks like.

Improving a Skill

When iterating on a skill based on test results or user feedback:

1. Generalize from feedback. A fix for one test case should improve all similar cases, not just the one that failed. If you're adding a narrow workaround, you're probably overfitting.

2. Keep it lean. Read the agent's behavior during test runs. If it's wasting time on unproductive steps, check whether the skill is causing that. Remove instructions that aren't helping.

3. Explain the why. Even if the user's feedback is terse, try to understand the underlying issue and transmit that understanding into the instructions. The agent will generalize better from reasoning than from rules.

4. Look for repeated work. If every test run independently creates the same helper script or takes the same multi-step approach, that's a signal. Bundle the script in scripts/ so future invocations don't reinvent it.

5. Don't over-engineer. A skill that's 100 lines and works is better than one that's 400 lines and covers every conceivable edge case. Start small, add complexity only when testing reveals the need.

Key Principles
