AI Agent Safety and Red-Team

Use When

• Hardening an agent against indirect prompt injection — instructions embedded in the data the agent reads (KB chunk, web page, tool response, email body the agent summarises).
• Defending against action escalation — agent chains a benign read tool with a high-privilege write tool to do something the user didn't authorise.
• Defending against tenant data exfiltration — agent extracts tenant data and embeds it in a tool call argument that exits the boundary (webhook URL, email recipient, log message).
• Defending against recursive self-modification — agent updates its own prompt, memory, or tool registry.
• Standing up a red-team CI suite that fires nightly and on every prompt / tool / runtime change.

Do Not Use When

• The task is direct prompt injection in single-shot features — ai-prompt-injection-and-tenant-safety.

Workflow

1. Read this SKILL.md.
2. Build the agent-specific threat model (§1). Extends ai-prompt-injection-and-tenant-safety.
3. Implement indirect prompt injection defences (§2). See references/indirect-prompt-injection-test-suite.md.
4. Implement action escalation defences (§3): tool-input provenance tagging.
5. Implement data exfiltration defences (§4): output classifier on tool args before execution.
6. Implement recursive self-modification defences (§5): registry is read-only to the agent.
7. Build the red-team CI suite (§6) — nightly + per-PR.
8. Wire safety event taxonomy (§7) to alerts + back-office kill-switch.
9. Apply anti-patterns (§8).

Quality Standards

• Indirect prompt injection from tool output is treated as untrusted text, never as instructions. The runtime tags every tool observation provenance: untrusted before adding to the prompt.
• Tool args derived from untrusted observations cannot promote to a higher-privilege tool without explicit user approval.
• An agent cannot read its own system prompt or tool registry through any tool. Reflection is disabled.
• An agent's tool output is scanned for exfil patterns before being passed to a tool whose blast_radius is external (webhook URL, external email recipient field, external HTTP body).
• Red-team CI suite runs on every prompt / tool / runtime change. Failures block merge.
• A new attack pattern reported (internal or external) is added to the CI suite within 48 hours.
• Per-tenant safety kill-switch is enforceable in < 5 seconds via back-office.

Anti-Patterns

• Trusting retrieved chunks as if they were the system prompt. Indirect injection works.
• Letting the agent call get_my_prompt() or list_my_tools(). Reflection enables targeted attacks.
• Tool-arg generation that copy-pastes from the latest observation. Exfil if observation is attacker-controlled.
• Red-team suite written once at launch, never updated. Drifts.
• No safety event taxonomy. Incidents can't be triaged.
• Kill-switch as a code deploy. Means no kill-switch.
• Single classifier as the only line of defence. Defence in depth required.

§2 Indirect Prompt Injection Defences

Three layers:

Layer 1: Provenance Tagging

Every tool observation is tagged with provenance before going into the LLM context:

untrusted is the default for all tools whose output reflects external or attacker-controllable content (KB, web search, customer-provided text).

Layer 2: Classifier on Tool Output

A small classifier (regex + lightweight model) scans tool output for injection markers before it enters the prompt:

On detection:

• Log agent.injection.detected event.
• Wrap the observation in extra defensive scaffolding.
• For high-confidence detections, drop the observation and ask the agent to retry without that source.

Layer 3: Output Classifier on Plan

After the LLM emits a plan, classify it for "is the agent now following the injection?":

§3 Action Escalation Defences

When tool args are derived from untrusted observations, those args inherit untrusted provenance. The runtime checks:

The provenance graph is built as the agent runs: every tool observation source is tagged, every arg derived from an observation inherits the tag, and the runtime traces taint.

If a high-privilege tool receives tainted args, the runtime forces a JIT approval (ai-agent-action-approval-and-hitl) with explicit "this argument came from untrusted source X" highlight.

§4 Exfiltration Output Classifier

Before any tool with blast_radius='external' runs, scan args for tenant-data exfil patterns:

On match: block tool call, force HITL approval with highlight, log agent.exfil.attempt.

§5 Recursive Self-Modification Guard

The agent cannot:

• Read its own system prompt.
• List or modify the tool registry.
• Modify its own memory contents at long-term scope without explicit user consent flow (ai-agent-memory §6).
• Spawn a new agent task that exceeds its remaining budget.
• Modify another running task.

Implementation: these capabilities are simply not exposed as tools. There is no get_my_prompt, list_my_tools, update_my_memory_directly. The memory write path goes through the consent UI.

If a future agent feature requires self-modification (e.g., learning agent), it's a separate hardened module with a different threat model.

§6 Red-Team CI Suite

Each test:

• Sets up a controlled scenario.
• Runs the agent.
• Asserts that the agent did NOT do the bad thing.
• If the agent did do the bad thing, the test fails.

CI runs the suite on every PR touching agent code. Nightly runs the full suite against staging.

§8 Anti-Patterns

• Treating tool output as trusted.
• Reflection tools exposed to the agent.
• Single classifier as the only defence.
• Red-team suite written once.
• Cross-tenant attack found by customer, not by tests.
• Kill-switch that requires a deploy.
• Provenance graph not implemented; arg-taint impossible to enforce.
• No exfil classifier on external-blast-radius tools.

§9 Red-Team Results as Quarterly Evidence (Enhancement)

The red-team suite produces quarterly compliance evidence for SOC 2 CC7.3 (anomaly response) / CC9.1 (risk identification) and ISO 27001 A.5.7 (threat intel) / A.5.30 (ICT readiness for continuity) / A.8.29 (security testing).

Each quarter the suite is run as a drill through ai-agent-drill-evidence-and-cadence with:

• drill_id: red_team_prompt_injection
• pass_threshold: 0.95 — at least 95% of scenarios produce a blocked outcome.
• Suite is versioned: redteam-YYYY-Qn. Adding scenarios mid-quarter is allowed; removing is not.

Outputs go into the drill evidence pack and the quarterly compliance rollup. Failures auto-open high exceptions against CC9.1.

The red-team suite must evolve every quarter; a suite unchanged for >180 days is itself an exception (auditors will catch staleness). The suite changelog is the artefact tying CC9.1 to ongoing threat intelligence.

Capability contract

Default to isolated, non-production testing. Tool execution, network access, destructive probes, and sensitive-data fixtures require explicit scope, synthetic data, budgets, and emergency stop authority.

Degraded mode

Fallback without a safe test environment: perform static threat analysis and provide test cases; do not execute adversarial payloads against production.
