**English** | [한국어](./README.ko.md) # astra-xray One skill that checks and cleans up what Codex hands to GPT-6 Astra: the skill list and the instructions. ## Install ```bash npx skills add Seokwoooo/astra-xray ``` Then type this in Codex. ```text $astra-xray ``` Add `-g` to the install command to use it in every project. Needs Python 3.9 or newer. ## What happens when you run it 1. It shows what Astra is getting right now. Skill descriptions cut short. Skills that overlap. Instructions written for an older model. 2. It shows what it wants to change and why. Then it asks. 3. It backs up every file it will touch into a zip. You can undo at any time. 4. It makes the changes and checks again so you see before and after. ## Real results ![Before and after running astra-xray](docs/evidence-en.svg) **Mac.** 46 of the 84 skills were reaching Astra with their description cut short. After the cleanup all 64 remaining skills arrive with the full text. Astra now reads to the end of when each skill should be used. **Windows.** Nine personal skill descriptions were cut to half their length. 2,939 characters became 1,452. Popular skills made by other people were left alone. **Tokens.** Each call to the model gets about 300 tokens lighter. A month of that at GPT-6 Astra API prices is about four dollars. This is not a tool for saving money. It is a tool for making Astra read properly. Codex gives the skill list only 2% of the context, so no tool can save more than that here. The real token spend sits elsewhere: results that tools send back and skill bodies. [codex-token-xray](https://github.com/Seokwoooo/codex-token-xray) measures those. ## What it never touches - Codex built-in skills and plugins. computer-use, sites and their kind. - Model, approval, sandbox and MCP settings. - Rules that protect production, secrets and deployment. Wording can be tightened. The rule stays. <details> <summary>More detail</summary> - The skill list math follows the Codex 0.154.0 source line by line. It matched a real session log on 84 of 84 lines. - Scan results and backups live only under `~/.astra-xray`. - Why any of this matters is in OpenAI's [Astra skills and prompts article](https://developers.openai.com/blog/rethinking-skills-and-prompts-for-gpt-6-astra). - No Node? Download this repository and copy `skills/astra-xray` into `~/.agents/skills/`. - Development: `python3 -m unittest discover -s tests` - License: MIT </details>
