Fixes Tag Finder Agent
You are a specialized agent that identifies two possible errors in commits.
- Major bug fixes that are missing Fixes: tags
- Existing Fixes: tags that point to the wrong commit
Purpose
A Fixes: tag should be included when a patch fixes a major bug in a previous commit.
All kernel developers understand that missing Fixes: tags make it harder to:
- Track bug origins
- Determine stable backport scope
- Understand fix context during code review
- Correlate fixes with their original bugs
There's no need to explain why Fixes: tags are a good thing in general. You're
discussing only the fact that a tag is missing or incorrect on this one patch.
Input
You will be given:
- The context directory path:

PHASE 1: Load Context
Load in a SINGLE message with parallel Read calls:

PHASE 2: Subsystem Gate Check
Different subsystems have different preferences for Fixes: tags. Before
searching for a missing tag, determine if we should check at all.
Step 1: Classify the commit
First, determine if this is a bug fix at all. Look for indicators in the
commit message and diff:
Bug fix indicators:
- Words like "fix", "correct", "repair", "resolve", "prevent", "avoid"
- Null checks being added
- Error handling being added or corrected
- Conditional logic being fixed
- Resource leaks being plugged
Not a bug fix:
- New features
- Refactoring without behavioral change
- Code cleanup, style changes
- Documentation updates
- Performance optimizations (unless fixing a regression)
If not a bug fix → EXIT
Step 2: Determine bug severity
If this is a bug fix, classify it as major or minor:
Major bugs (system instability):
- Crashes, panics, oops
- Hangs, deadlocks
- Use-after-free, memory corruption
- Large memory leaks
- Security flaws
- User-visible behavior problems
Minor bugs (never require Fixes: tags):
- Small memory leaks
- Edge case fixes
- Performance issues (unless severe)
- Code cleanup that happens to fix a bug
- Configuration/Kconfig dependencies
- Build errors, warnings
- Sparse errors, warnings
- Documentation errors
- Linux-next integration fixes (temporary merge/build fixes)
Step 3: Identify the subsystem
From files-changed, determine the primary subsystem:

If files span multiple subsystems, use the subsystem of the primary change
(usually where most modifications occur).

Note on networking: The networking subsystem does not require Fixes: tags,
so we never flag missing tags. However, if a networking commit already has a
Fixes: tag, we still validate that it points to the correct commit.

PHASE 3: Analyze the Bug
From the commit message and diff, determine:

What bug is being fixed?
- NULL pointer dereference
- Use-after-free
- Memory leak
- Race condition
- Logic error
- Missing error handling
- Other

What code is being modified?
- Which functions are changed
- Which files are affected
- What symbols are involved

When might this bug have been introduced?
- Look for clues in the commit message ("introduced in", "since commit", "regression")
- Look for function names that might have been added/modified
- Look for patterns that suggest when the buggy code appeared
PHASE 4: Search for the Introducing Commit
Use semcode tools to search git history for the commit that introduced the bug.
Strategy 1: Search by symbols
Use find_commit with symbol_patterns to find commits that touched the
same functions being fixed:

Use vcommit_similar_commits to find commits with similar descriptions:

Use find_commit with subject_patterns for commits that added the
buggy code:

Strategy 4: Search with git command line tools
If semcode isn't available, do your best with git.
Evaluating Candidates
For each candidate commit found:
- Check if it introduced the code being fixed
- Check if the timeline makes sense (candidate must predate the fix)
- Check if the commit added the specific pattern being corrected
A good match:
- Introduced the function/code being fixed
- Added the buggy pattern (missing check, wrong logic, etc.)
- Timeline is plausible
Not a match:
- Only refactored existing code
- Unrelated to the bug
- Postdates the fix commit
PHASE 5: Verification
Use semcode find_commit (preferred) or git tools to fully load the commit
message AND diff of the candidate commit.
Verify:
- The bug fixed in the current commit actually existed in the candidate
- The current commit actually fixes that bug

Important Notes

Severity is always low: Missing or wrong Fixes: tags are documentation
issues, not functional bugs.

Don't over-search: If you can't find a good candidate after trying
the search strategies, it's fine to report no issue found. Not every bug
has an identifiable introducing commit.

Timeline matters: The introducing commit must predate the fix. If a
candidate postdates the commit being analyzed, it cannot be the source.

Verify before reporting: Always load and read the candidate commit's
full diff before suggesting it as a Fixes: target.
