| description | Discover and document your VIP (Values, Identity, Purpose) — the identity foundation that makes speaking, selling, and content creation congruent and authentic. Maps the roles you play, the values each role embodies, and the deeper purpose behind each. Produces a VIP document that feeds into signature talks, brand voice, content strategy, and sales calls. Use when building a personal brand foundation, preparing to create a signature talk, onboarding a new client, doing identity work, or when someone feels misaligned between who they are and how they communicate. Triggers on "VIP exercise", "values identity purpose", "discover my VIP", "identity work", "who am I as a speaker", "brand foundation", "find my message", "what should I speak about", "congruency work", or any request to clarify personal/professional identity for communication purposes. Also run this BEFORE using create-signature-talk if no VIP document exists. |
Discover VIP — Values, Identity, Purpose
The VIP is the identity foundation that makes all communication congruent. Without it, frameworks are empty scripts. With it, they become authentic extensions of who you are.
Based on Eli Wilde's VIP framework from the Unstoppable Speaker system. Read the full source transcript at legends/eli-wilde/bonus-resources/day-1-vip-identity-foundation-transcript.md for deeper context before running this skill.

Why VIP Matters
There are four layers to authentic communication:
- What you SAY
- What you BELIEVE about what you're saying
- Your INTENTION behind what you're saying
- Your BELIEFS about yourself
Two people can say the same words and get completely different responses. The difference is congruency — alignment between words, beliefs, intention, and identity. VIP builds that alignment from the ground up.
"The strongest force in the human psyche is for a person to remain consistent with who they believe they are." — Sigmund Freud (via Eli Wilde)
Workflow
PHASE 1: CONTEXT GATHERING
Before asking questions, mine existing data. The user may have material that reveals their VIP without them needing to articulate it from scratch.
For the primary user (Andrew Naegele):
- Check
business/clients/los-naegele/profiles/ for voice profiles, character profiles, character research
- Check
personal/ for any existing identity or values work
- Use
mcp__qmd__query to search chronicle conversations for values, identity patterns, purpose statements, and decisions that reveal who Andrew is
- Search for existing brand positioning, offer docs, or content that reveals core beliefs
For clients:
- Check
business/clients/{client}/profiles/ for character profiles, voice profiles, story inventories
- Check for offer docs, brand research, onboarding materials in their client folder
- Use
mcp__qmd__query to search for call transcripts or conversations with/about this person
- Check for any existing VIP or identity work
For new users with no existing data:
Present a brief summary of what you found. This saves time, shows the user you've done homework, and seeds the conversation with real patterns rather than cold-start abstractions.
PHASE 2: IDENTITY MAPPING (The Roles)
Use AskUserQuestion to walk through identity discovery conversationally.
Question 1: "What are the main roles you play in your life? Think beyond job titles — father, leader, builder, teacher, provocateur, protector, creator. List every identity that matters to you."
If the user struggles, prompt with categories:
- Professional roles (CEO, consultant, coach, creator, engineer, operator)
- Relationship roles (father, husband, partner, friend, mentor)
- Community roles (leader, contributor, provocateur, teacher)
- Personal roles (learner, athlete, builder, artist, seeker)
Question 2: "Which 3-5 of these feel most CORE to who you are? Not the ones you think you should pick — the ones that, if someone took them away, you wouldn't recognize yourself."
These become the primary identities for the VIP document.
PHASE 3: VALUES EXCAVATION (What Each Role Stands For)
For each primary identity, ask:
Question: "As a [ROLE], what does a GREAT version of that role believe and stand for? What are the non-negotiable values? What would you never compromise on?"
Guide with these prompts if needed:
- "What would make you walk away from a deal/opportunity/relationship?"
- "What do you believe that most people in your space DON'T believe?"
- "What's the hill you'd die on?"
Look for PATTERNS across roles. Values that show up in multiple identities are CORE values — these are the ones that make everything congruent.
Mine chronicle data here too. Look for:
- Decisions the person has made and WHY
- Things they've pushed back on
- What gets them excited vs what drains them
- Recurring themes in how they talk about work, clients, family
- Moments where they were most alive or most frustrated
PHASE 4: PURPOSE DISCOVERY (The WHY Behind Each Role)
For each primary identity, ask:
Question: "WHY do you play this role? Not the surface reason — the deeper one. What would be lost in the world if you stopped?"
Guide with:
- "Who specifically benefits when you're great at this role?"
- "What's the ripple effect? If you're a great [ROLE], what happens downstream?"
- "20 years from now, if you nailed this role, what would be different?"
Apply the Captain Mel Fisher framework (see references/vip-framework.md):
- Do you believe the gold is out there? (Is there real impact to be made?)
- Do you believe YOU can find it? (Are you the right person for this?)
- Is it WORTH IT? (Is the cost of pursuing this justified by what you'll create?)
PHASE 5: SYNTHESIS — THE VIP DOCUMENT
Produce a complete VIP document. Save location:
- For Andrew:
vault/personal/vip-identity-foundation.md
- For clients:
vault/business/clients/{client}/profiles/vip-identity-foundation.md
- For other users: ask where they want it saved
Use the following structure with proper vault frontmatter (all 7 required fields):
---
type: reference
source: [person name]
domain: personal
status: active
evolved-into: ""
use-when: "grounding any content, talk, or communication in [person]'s authentic identity"
created: YYYY-MM-DD
tags: [vip, identity, values, purpose]

# [Name] — VIP Identity Foundation
## Core Identities
[The 3-5 primary roles with brief descriptions of what each means to this person]
## Identity: [Role 1]
### Values
[What this role stands for — non-negotiables, beliefs, standards]
### Purpose
[The deeper WHY — what would be lost if they stopped]
### How This Shows Up
[Specific behaviors, decisions, patterns that demonstrate this identity in action]
## Identity: [Role 2]
[Same structure repeated for each primary identity]
## Cross-Cutting Values (Show Up Everywhere)
[Values that appear across multiple identities — these are the deepest, most foundational ones. These are what make the person congruent across all contexts.]
## The Message
[One paragraph synthesizing: given these identities, values, and purposes — what is the CORE MESSAGE this person is here to deliver? This is what their signature talk, brand, and content should all orbit around.]
## Hidden Gold Audit
[Which hidden gold patterns (doubt, inadequacy, lone wolf, etc.) does this person need to watch for? Which success patterns (action-taking, resilience, mission-driven, etc.) are already strong? Be honest — this is diagnostic, not flattery.]
## 3 Beliefs Check
1. **The gold is there**: [Do they believe the impact/opportunity exists? Evidence.]
2. **I can find it**: [Do they believe THEY are the right person? Evidence.]
3. **It's worth it**: [Are they willing to pay the cost? Evidence.]
PHASE 6: CONNECTION TO OTHER SKILLS
After producing the VIP document, explain how it connects to other work:
- create-signature-talk: The "Core Message" from the VIP becomes the thesis of the talk. The values determine what the speaker will and won't say. Run VIP before building any signature talk.
- extract-creator-voice: The VIP enriches voice extraction — values and purpose explain WHY the person speaks the way they do, not just how.
- client-onboard: Running VIP before character profiles and voice extraction produces richer, more authentic outputs.
- apply-persuasion-techniques: The VIP determines which techniques feel authentic. A speaker whose core value is radical transparency shouldn't use heavy assumptive language — it'll feel incongruent and the audience will sense it.
- brand-voice: The VIP IS the brand at its deepest level. Brand voice should be an expression of VIP, not a separate construct.
- create-youtube-scripts / create-x-content / create-substack-articles: Content that aligns with VIP feels authentic and builds trust. Content that doesn't feels like performing.
Key Principles
- VIP is discovery, not invention. The values and purpose already exist — the skill surfaces them.
- Congruency beats technique. A mediocre framework delivered with full alignment outperforms a perfect framework delivered without belief.
- The orange principle: when you get squeezed by life, what comes out is what's on the inside. VIP fills you with the right stuff.
- Identity drives behavior. People remain consistent with who they believe they are. Build the identity first, and the actions follow.
- "It's not about your intention. It's about the audience's reception." But reception improves dramatically when intention is clear and congruent.
