| description | Visual analysis skill based on Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui's sociología de la imagen methodology. Use this skill whenever the user shares an image, describes a visual scene, asks about visual culture, art analysis, photography, textiles, murals, advertisements, or any visual material that should be read as a site of autonomous knowledge production rather than mere illustration. Triggers on: /image-read, "read this image", "analyze this visual", "what does this image say", "sociology of the image", "visual analysis", "textile analysis", "read this ad", "decolonial reading of [visual]", or any context where images are being treated as evidence rather than as theory-producers. Also trigger when analyzing brand identity, propaganda, colonial imagery, or indigenous visual culture.

Chixi-Image — Sociology of the Image
"La sociología de la imagen considera a todas las prácticas de representación
como su foco de atención; se dirige a la totalidad del mundo visual, desde la
publicidad, la fotografía de prensa, el archivo de imágenes, el arte pictórico,
el dibujo y el textil."
— Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui (2023, p. 314)
What This Skill Does
Reads any visual material — image, video frame, textile, advertisement, artwork,
archive photograph — not as illustration but as autonomous theoretical production.
The image is not decoded; it is listened to. It is not a source of data; it is a
source of theory.
Command
/image-read [description, URL, or pasted image]
/image-read textile — activates the extra textile-specific lens
The Five-Lens Reading Protocol
Every chixi-image reading applies these five lenses:
1. [FUERZA ACTIVA]
What social forces does this image re-actualize? (Note: not "represent" —
re-actualizar). What historical power relations are made present again through
this visual configuration?
"la imagen pictórica o audiovisual re-actualiza las fuerzas que dan forma a la sociedad"
(Rivera Cusicanqui, 2023, p. 78-79)
2. [SENTIDOS NO CENSURADOS]
What does this image communicate that official language cannot or does not?
What has escaped the verbal censor? What meaning runs underneath the discourse?
(Rivera Cusicanqui, 2023)
3. [COLONIALISMO VISIBLE]
What colonial logic is operating in the image's composition, perspective, or
subject positioning? Who is looking? Who is looked at? What hierarchy organizes
the visual field? What gaze is assumed?
4. [PARTICIPACIÓN PRESUPUESTA]
What does the image assume the viewer already participates in? What world does
it presuppose? What must the viewer already know, believe, or be to understand
this image?
"observa aquello en lo que ya de hecho participa; la participación no es un
instrumento al servicio de la observación, sino su presupuesto"
(Rivera Cusicanqui, 2023, p. 313)
5. [PREGUNTA QUE LA IMAGEN HACE]
Frame the image not as content to be decoded but as a question. What is
the image asking? What does it interrogate? The image is not answering; it
is questioning.
Extra Lens: Textile Mode (/image-read textile)
When analyzing textiles, weavings, or fabric patterns, adds a sixth lens:
6. [MATEMÁTICA SERIAL]
The serial, mathematical, and diplomatic knowledge encoded in the textile's
structure. Read the pattern as computation, the threading as intercultural
negotiation.
"el textil es un conocimiento teórico y práctico de altísimo nivel, en primer
lugar es una forma de matemática serial" (Rivera Cusicanqui, seminario
Colonialismo, identidad y Género)
"tejía interculturalmente las relaciones con el enemigo"
(Rivera Cusicanqui, seminario Colonialismo, identidad y Género)
Critical Rules
-
The image is theorist, not evidence. Do not treat the image as a source
of data to be extracted. Treat it as a source of theory to be engaged with.
-
Do not produce "the meaning" of the image. Produce a field of forces the
image participates in. The reading opens questions, not closes them.
-
The "intrusive eye" must be named. The agent acknowledges its own position
as viewer. "Hacer de la imagen un objeto de análisis, usar la imagen como práctica
de comunicación horizontal, sentir que nuestro «ojo intruso» puede volverse un aliado"
(Rivera Cusicanqui, 2023, p. 321). The agent should not pretend neutrality.
-
Visual anthropology ≠ sociology of the image. Visual anthropology participates
in order to observe. The sociology of the image observes what it already participates
in. The difference is the direction of the arrow.
