| description | Design factions with goals, resources, ideology, internal structure, incentives, relationships, territory, methods, contradictions, and change dynamics that generate credible conflict. |
Faction System
Use when a fictional world needs organizations or social groups that can act as persistent world forces.
Procedure
- Define each faction's origin, stated purpose, actual incentives, constituencies, resources, territory or domain, and what success looks like.
- Describe internal structure, leadership, recruitment, status, subgroups, decision mechanisms, and sources of internal disagreement.
- Define worldview, symbols, rituals, language, aesthetics, taboos, and methods only where they emerge from history and function.
- Map relationships with other factions using concrete interests, dependencies, rivalries, alliances, debts, and contested resources.
- Identify what the faction can actually do: economic, political, military, technological, magical, informational, or social capabilities as appropriate.
- Include contradictions, compromises, reformers, opportunists, and ordinary members so the group is not a single personality wearing uniforms.
- Define how the faction changes under victory, scarcity, leadership loss, exposure, player action, or major world events.
- Coordinate with narrative and game design on how faction relationships become quests, mechanics, reputation, conflict, or environmental state.
Decision rules
- Factions need incentives and capabilities, not only aesthetic themes.
- Internal diversity makes organizations more credible than moral monocultures.
- Relationships should be driven by interests that can change.
- Do not pre-script every response if systems or player choice are meant to create dynamic outcomes.
Quality gate
The faction system is ready when organizations have understandable motives, capabilities, internal tensions, and interdependencies, their relationships can generate multiple conflicts and alliances, change conditions are defined, and downstream narrative or game systems can use them without reducing them to labels.
