Foley Recording
What Is Foley
Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects synchronized to the picture in post-production. It is named after Jack Foley, who pioneered the technique. Foley adds reality, presence, and physicality that production audio alone cannot capture.
Core Foley Categories
- Footsteps: Recorded for every character on every surface. The most time-consuming Foley category but essential for grounding characters in the environment.
- Cloth/Movement: The rustle and movement of clothing as characters move. Subtle but critical for presence.
- Props: Every object interaction -- picking up a glass, opening a door, handling a weapon, typing, eating.
- Body movements: Sitting down, standing up, leaning, impact of falls.
Foley Recording Setup
- Foley pit: A recessed area with interchangeable surfaces (concrete, wood, gravel, tile, dirt, metal grating). At minimum, collect a variety of surface materials you can walk on.
- Microphone: Large-diaphragm condenser or shotgun mic (Sennheiser MKH 416 is the industry standard). Position close to the sound source for detail.
- Room: Quiet, dead room (minimal reverb). The recording should be dry -- reverb is added in the mix to match the on-screen space.
- Monitor: A screen playing the picture. The Foley artist watches and performs in sync.
- Props collection: Build a library of objects over time. Different shoes, glass types, fabric, paper, metal objects, kitchen items, hardware.
Foley Performance Tips
- Watch the scene multiple times before performing. Internalize the rhythm and character of the movement.
- Perform to picture. Sync is critical -- even a few frames off will feel wrong.
- Vary intensity. A character's footsteps change based on their emotional state (hurried, cautious, exhausted, confident).
- Record multiple takes. Choose the best performance and timing.
- Record room tone at the same session for seamless editing.
Sound Effects Creation
Layering Technique
Complex sounds are built from multiple simple elements layered together:
Example: Creating a futuristic door sound
- Layer 1: A real pneumatic hiss (air release)
- Layer 2: A metal scrape or slide
- Layer 3: A servo motor whine (pitch-shifted)
- Layer 4: A low-frequency thud for the seal engaging
- Layer 5: A synthesized electronic chirp for the interface
Each layer contributes one quality: weight, texture, mechanism, feedback. Adjust the timing, pitch, and volume of each layer until the composite sounds unified and believable.
Processing Techniques
- Pitch shifting: Change the pitch of a recording to create new sounds. A lion roar pitched down becomes a monster. A cat purr pitched down becomes a spacecraft engine.
- Time stretching: Slow a sound down without changing pitch. Reveals hidden textures and creates massive, epic sounds.
- Reverse: Play a sound backward for surreal, otherworldly effects. Reversed reverb tails create powerful anticipatory moments.
- Convolution reverb: Place any sound in any space by using an impulse response recording. A whisper in a cathedral. A gunshot in a parking garage.
- Granular synthesis: Break sounds into tiny grains and reassemble them. Creates textures, pads, and evolving soundscapes from any source material.
- Ring modulation and frequency shifting: Create metallic, alien, and robotic qualities.
- Distortion and saturation: Add aggression, warmth, or grit depending on the type and amount.
Designing Specific Sound Categories
Weapons and impacts:
- Layer a sharp transient (snap, crack) with a body (thud, boom) and a tail (rattle, ring, debris)
- Vary the layers based on material: metal impacts ring, wood impacts thud, flesh impacts are dull
- Distance affects character: close impacts are detailed and bright, distant impacts are delayed and bass-heavy
Vehicles and machinery:
- Record the real thing when possible. Nothing replaces authentic mechanical sounds.
- Layer engine loop, exhaust, mechanical clatter, tire/surface interaction, wind
- Create speed variations by pitch-shifting and layering different RPM recordings
- Interior vs exterior perspective changes the entire character of the sound
Creatures and monsters:
- Start with real animal recordings. Layer multiple animals.
- Pitch shift, time stretch, and add processing
- Add human elements (breath, throat sounds) for relatability
- Consider the creature's size (larger = lower pitch, slower movements), material (organic, mechanical, supernatural), and emotional state (aggressive, curious, frightened)
Ambient Soundscapes
Building an Ambience
An ambient soundscape is the continuous background sound of a location. It is the sonic foundation that tells the audience where they are.
The layered approach:
- Bed layer: The constant, broadband sound of the environment. City hum, forest broadband, ocean, room tone. This layer never stops.
- Mid-ground elements: Regular but not constant sounds. Birds at intervals, distant traffic, wind gusts, mechanical hum cycling on and off.
- Foreground details: Specific, identifiable sounds that punctuate the ambience. A dog barking, a car horn, a door closing, a specific bird call.
- Movement and variation: Subtle changes over time so the ambience does not feel like a static loop. Slowly vary the mix of elements, introduce and remove details, shift the frequency balance.
Recording Ambiences in the Field
- Record for a minimum of 2-3 minutes at each location. Longer is better for variety.
- Use a stereo microphone setup (XY, ORTF, or MS) for spatial accuracy.
- Hold still. Your own clothing and movement noise will ruin the recording.
- Note the location, time, weather, and any notable sound events in a log.
- Record at multiple times of day. Dawn, midday, evening, and night all sound different.
- Wait for disruptive sounds to pass (airplanes, leaf blowers) or accept them and plan to edit around them.
Common Ambience Types and Their Components
City street: Traffic broadband, engine pass-bys, pedestrian footsteps, distant conversation, crosswalk signals, construction, HVAC exhaust, pigeons.
Forest: Broadband leaf rustle, bird calls at various distances, insect buzz, wind through trees, animal movement in underbrush, water if a creek is present.
Office interior: HVAC hum, fluorescent light buzz, keyboard typing at distance, phone rings, footsteps on carpet, elevator ding, muffled conversation.
Underwater: Low-frequency rumble, bubble patterns, muffled surface sounds, organic clicks and creaks, current movement.
Game Audio
Game Audio vs Linear Media
Game audio is fundamentally different from film sound design:
- Non-linear: Sounds must respond to player actions in real-time. You cannot predict when events will happen.
- Interactive: The player triggers sounds through gameplay. Sound is feedback.
- Looping: Music and ambiences must loop seamlessly. Events repeat. Nothing should feel repetitive.
- Variability: Multiple variations of the same sound prevent listener fatigue (3-5 footstep variations per surface, 5-10 weapon fire variations).
- Performance: Game audio competes for CPU and memory with graphics, physics, and AI. Optimization matters.
Middleware: Wwise
Audiokinetic Wwise is the most widely used game audio middleware:
- Events: Define what happens when the game triggers a sound (play, stop, pause, set switch)
- Random containers: Play a random selection from a pool of variations to prevent repetition
- Blend containers: Layer multiple sounds that play simultaneously

- Visit locations at different times. Sound changes dramatically between day, night, weekday, and weekend.
