The Invisible Cut
The goal of most editing is to be invisible. The audience should be absorbed in the story, not aware of the editing. Cuts feel invisible when they:
- Follow the audience's natural attention (cutting to what the viewer wants to see next)
- Maintain consistent screen direction and spatial orientation
- Use movement to mask the cut (cutting on action)
- Match the emotional rhythm of the scene
Motivation for Every Cut
Before making any cut, ask: why am I cutting here? Valid reasons include:
- New information: showing something the audience needs to see
- Reaction: showing how a character responds to dialogue or events
- Emphasis: moving closer to highlight an emotion or detail
- Pacing: the current shot has served its purpose and energy needs to shift
- Context: establishing or re-establishing spatial relationships
If you cannot articulate why you are cutting, the cut may not be needed.
The Kuleshov Effect
The meaning of a shot changes based on what precedes and follows it. A neutral face followed by a plate of food reads as hunger. The same face followed by a coffin reads as grief. This is the fundamental power of editing: juxtaposition creates meaning that does not exist in either shot alone.
Pacing and Rhythm
Understanding Pacing
Pacing is the perceived speed of the edit. It is not simply about cutting fast or slow -- it is about matching the emotional needs of the story at each moment.
- Fast pacing: Short shots (1-3 seconds), frequent cuts. Creates energy, urgency, excitement, anxiety.
- Moderate pacing: Medium shots (3-7 seconds). Conversational, informational, steady.
- Slow pacing: Long shots (7+ seconds), fewer cuts. Creates contemplation, tension, dread, intimacy.
Rhythm
Rhythm is the pattern of pacing. Like music, editing has beats:
- Regular rhythm: Consistent shot lengths create a predictable, comfortable feeling. Good for montages, establishing sequences.
- Accelerating rhythm: Shots get progressively shorter. Builds tension toward a climax.
- Decelerating rhythm: Shots get progressively longer. Resolves tension, creates calm after a storm.
- Syncopated rhythm: Irregular shot lengths that keep the audience slightly off-balance. Good for comedy, unease, energy.
Breathing Room
After an intense sequence, give the audience a beat to process. A long-held shot, a quiet moment, a landscape. Constant intensity becomes numbing. The valleys make the peaks feel higher.
Essential Cut Types
The Hard Cut (Straight Cut)
Direct transition from one shot to another. The default and most common cut. Works for nearly everything when properly motivated.
Cutting on Action
Cut in the middle of a physical movement. The subject begins an action in shot A and completes it in shot B. The brain is processing the movement and does not register the cut. This is the most reliable way to create invisible edits.
Examples: a person turning their head, opening a door, sitting down, picking up an object, throwing a punch.
The J-Cut
Audio from the next shot begins before the visual transition. The audience hears dialogue, ambient sound, or music from the upcoming scene while still seeing the current scene.

The L-Cut

The Match Cut
Visual or conceptual similarity connects two shots. A ball thrown in the air cuts to a planet in space. A door closing cuts to a book closing. Match cuts create poetic connections and can bridge time, location, and theme in a single edit.
The Jump Cut
A cut within the same shot or angle that creates a visible jump in time or position. Traditionally considered an error, now used intentionally for:
- Showing the passage of time
- Creating energy or urgency (common in vlogs and music videos)
- Stylistic choice in art films and documentaries
- Editing down a single interview take (removing pauses or tangents)
The Smash Cut
Abrupt transition from a quiet or calm scene to a loud or intense one (or vice versa). The jarring contrast is the point. Used for comedic effect, shock, or waking the audience.
The Cross-Cut (Parallel Editing)
Alternating between two or more scenes happening simultaneously. Builds tension by implying convergence. The audience anticipates the threads meeting.
Montage Theory and Technique
Eisenstein's Montage Types
- Metric montage: Shots cut to a fixed length regardless of content. Creates mechanical, rhythmic feeling.
- Rhythmic montage: Cut points follow the visual rhythm within the shots. Action and composition determine timing.
