• Real-time deadlines are hard deadlines - clearly communicate if timing requirements might not be achievable.

Anti-Patterns

• No watchdog timer -- if firmware hangs, the device is bricked until power-cycled. Always configure a hardware watchdog with a fail-safe reset state.
• Blocking delays in ISRs -- interrupt service routines must be short. Set a flag and handle work in a task, never call delay() or printf() in an ISR.
• Unbounded malloc on embedded -- dynamic allocation fragments limited heap memory. Use static allocation or fixed-size memory pools.
• Ignoring stack overflow -- FreeRTOS tasks with undersized stacks silently corrupt memory. Use uxTaskGetStackHighWaterMark() to measure, then add 20% margin.
• Assuming peripheral defaults -- register values after reset are not always what you expect. Explicitly configure every peripheral you use.
