Creatures and Encounter Rules (Thematic)
Scope
Use this skill for enemy composition, challenge tuning, and interpreting creature role profiles across level bands.
Creature role taxonomy
- Minion: low durability, pressure via numbers.
- Soldier: balanced frontline threat.
- Brute: high durability and impact damage.
- Slayer: high initiative and burst lethality.
- Commander: tactical control + team amplification.
- Leader: support/control profile with weaker direct offense.
- Beast: instinctive mobility/aggression profile.
- Behemoth: large-scale anchor threat.
Level scaling model
- Creature stat blocks are provided in level bands from 1-20.
- Same role scales numerically with increasing threat floor.
- Role identity remains stable while health, damage, defenses, and tempo rise.
Encounter difficulty framing
- Easy: enemy total levels < half player total levels.
- Standard: enemy totals around half to equal player totals.
- Difficult: enemy totals exceed player totals (up to ~2x in guidance).
Dynamic encounter tools
- Add reinforcements, hazards, and objective shifts to prevent static slugfests.
- Use role mixes to target party weaknesses (mobility, willpower, anti-range, etc.).
- Include occasional unwinnable states where retreat is valid play.
