Fracture Mechanics Fundamentals
Stress intensity factor (K):
K = σ_remote × √(πa) × F(a/W) [MPa√m; σ = applied stress; a = crack length; F = geometry function]
K_I (opening mode), K_II (shear), K_III (tearing); K_I dominant for most structural cracks
Plane strain fracture toughness K_IC:
Material property (minimum K at fracture) measured in plane strain
K_IC = K at brittle fracture under plane strain (thick specimens → lower bound of toughness)
Critical crack size from K_IC:
a_critical = (1/π) × (K_IC / (σ × F))² [m; from K_IC = σ√(πa) × F]
Design safe-life: a_detectable ≤ a_critical / SF [SF = safety factor; typically 2.0–4.0]
J-integral (energy release rate approach):
J = G = K²/E' (plane stress: E' = E; plane strain: E' = E/(1-ν²))
J_IC: critical J at fracture initiation → more applicable when plasticity is large

ASTM E399 — Plane Strain K_IC Test
Specimen Geometry
Standard specimens:
- SE(B): Single Edge Bend; 3-point bend; simplest
- C(T): Compact Tension; most common; space-efficient
- A(T): Arc-shaped Tension (for curved bodies like pipes)
- DC(T): Disk-shaped Compact Tension (for round bar stock)
Crack length ratio: a/W = 0.45–0.55 [a = crack length; W = specimen width]
Specimen thickness B: B ≥ 2.5 × (K_IC/σ_ys)² → plane strain condition (must be verified)
Width W: W ≥ 5B (minimum)
Span S (for SE(B)): S = 4W
Specimen orientation (ASTM E399):
Notation: "L-T" = crack in L direction (loading), propagating in T direction
Critical orientations for wrought products: L-T (highest K_IC); T-L (lower); S-L (lowest)
Fatigue Pre-cracking
Required: machined notch → fatigue pre-crack of length ≥ 0.025W or 1.3 mm (whichever larger)
Loading: cyclic at K_max ≤ 0.6 × K_Q (candidate K_IC)
Stress ratio: R = K_min/K_max = 0.1–0.5 (positive ratio avoids contact)
Final pre-crack K_max: ≤ 0.6 × K_IC (prevents plastic zone from affecting test)
Straightness check: crack front must be within 10% of mean crack length across thickness
Test Procedure
Load-displacement record:
Attach clip gauge at knife edges on crack mouth; record P vs. CMOD (crack mouth opening displacement)
Load determination (P_Q — conditional K):
Draw secant line with slope 5% less than initial linear slope → intersection = P_5
P_Q = P_5 if max load P_max ≤ 1.1 × P_5; else P_Q = P_max
K_Q calculation:
C(T): K_Q = P_Q × f(a/W) / (B × √W) [f(a/W) from ASTM E399 formula; polynomial function of a/W]
SE(B): K_Q = P_Q × S × g(a/W) / (B × W^(3/2))
Validity check (plane strain):
B ≥ 2.5 × (K_Q/σ_ys)² AND a ≥ 2.5 × (K_Q/σ_ys)²
If both satisfied: K_IC = K_Q; else: specimen not in plane strain; use larger specimens or J-integral (E1820)
ASTM E1820 — J-Integral and R-Curve
Why J-integral (vs. K)?
K_IC requires plane strain; for lower-strength ductile materials → very large specimens
J_IC: valid with smaller specimens; accounts for plasticity
K_IC_equivalent = √(J_IC × E / (1 - ν²)) — can convert J_IC to effective toughness
Single-Specimen J-R Curve (Normalization Method)
Load-displacement curve analysis:
J = J_elastic + J_plastic
J_elastic = K² × (1-ν²) / E
J_plastic = η_pl × A_pl / (B_net × b_0) [A_pl = plastic area under P-v curve; η_pl ≈ 2.0 for SE(B); b_0 = initial ligament]
Crack growth monitoring:

r = rotational factor ≈ 0.44 (SE(B)) or 0.4 (C(T)); V_p = plastic clip gauge displacement
Critical CTOD values:
δ_c: critical CTOD at onset of fracture (pop-in or maximum load)
δ_u: unstable fracture after some crack growth
δ_m: maximum load CTOD

Critical flaw size acceptance:
