Da Vinci Define — Problem Definition & Direction Setting with 7 Principles
Apply the 7 Da Vincian Principles from Michael Gelb's How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci to define problems, set direction, and conduct deep self-reflection. While /rethink-unblock solves technical blockers and /sparks-create generates creative ideas, /davinci-define helps you figure out what the right question is before you start solving.

Process
Step 1: State the Situation
Situation: [What's going on — the context, not yet a "problem"]

Step 2: Select a Mode

If the user doesn't specify a mode, default to Sample mode. Analyze the situation and select the 2-3 most relevant principles.
Principle selection guide for Sample mode:
- Direction/purpose unclear → Curiosità + Connessione
- Fear of uncertainty → Sfumato + Dimostrazione
- Overthinking, analysis paralysis → Arte/Scienza + Corporalità
- Values misalignment → Curiosità + Dimostrazione
- Can't see the big picture → Connessione + Sensazione
- Burned out, disconnected → Sensazione + Corporalità
Step 3: Apply the Selected Principles
For each principle, follow this structure:
- State the principle's core question as it applies to the situation
- Produce a specific, grounded reflection (not generic advice)
- Generate 1-2 concrete self-check questions
- Suggest a small experiment or action to test the insight
Step 4: Synthesize and Recommend
Produce actionable output (see Output Format).
The 7 Da Vincian Principles
1. Curiosità (큐리오시타) — 지적 호기심
다빈치는 수천 쪽의 노트에 질문을 쏟아냈다. 그는 "경험의 제자"였다.
Core question: "진짜 알고 싶은 것은 무엇인가? 질문하기를 멈춘 영역은 어디인가?"
Application to problem definition:
- 상황에 대해 100가지 질문을 쏟아낸다 (검열 없이)
- 가장 끌리는 10개를 골라낸다 — 이것이 진짜 관심사의 지도다
- "왜 이 질문이 끌리는가?"를 다시 묻는다
Self-check:
- 호기심이 줄어든 영역은 없는가?
- "당연하다"고 넘긴 전제 중 실제로 검증한 것은 무엇인가?
2. Dimostrazione (디모스트라지오네) — 경험을 통한 검증
"남의 말을 그대로 받아들이지 말고, 실험하고 관찰하여 스스로 확인하라."
Core question: "이 믿음은 직접 경험에서 온 것인가, 남의 말에서 온 것인가?"
Application to problem definition:
- 현재 상황을 이끄는 핵심 신념 3가지를 적는다
- 각 신념의 출처를 추적한다: 미디어? 타인? 직접 경험?
- 검증되지 않은 신념에 대해 작은 실험을 설계한다
Self-check:
- "이게 맞다"고 믿는 것 중 실제로 시험해본 적 없는 것은?
- 실패에서 배운 마지막 교훈은 무엇인가?
3. Sensazione (센사지오네) — 감각의 정제
"아름다움은 모든 형태에서 창의적 정신에 영감을 주고 영혼을 풍요롭게 한다."
Core question: "이 상황을 머리가 아닌 감각으로 느끼면 무엇이 보이는가?"
Application to problem definition:
- 현재 상황을 오감으로 묘사한다 — 어떤 색인가? 어떤 소리인가? 어떤 질감인가?
- "이 결정을 내렸을 때 몸이 어떻게 반응하는가?"를 관찰한다
- 무감각하게 지나치고 있는 신호가 있는지 점검한다

4. Sfumato (스푸마토) — 모호함과 불확실성 포용
모나리자의 미소는 보는 각도에 따라 달라진다. 다빈치는 이 모호함을 의도적으로 설계했다.
Core question: "성급하게 결론짓고 있지 않은가? 모호함 속에 숨은 가능성은?"
Application to problem definition:
- "혼돈 인내력(confusion endurance)"을 발휘한다 — 즉답을 찾으려는 충동을 참는다
- 상황의 역설을 탐색한다:
- 이 선택의 장점이 곧 단점이 되는 지점은?
- 포기하고 싶은 것과 지키고 싶은 것이 사실은 같은 것은 아닌가?
- 불확실성을 "위협"이 아닌 "아직 열려 있는 가능성"으로 재정의한다
Self-check:
- 확실한 답이 없다는 이유로 회피하고 있는 결정은?
- "아직 모른다"고 솔직하게 인정할 수 있는가?
5. Arte/Scienza (아르테/사이엔자) — 예술과 과학의 균형
"예술의 과학을 공부하고, 과학의 예술을 공부하라."
Core question: "논리와 직관 중 어느 쪽만 쓰고 있는가? 균형은 잡혀 있는가?"
Application to problem definition:
- 마인드맵으로 상황을 비선형적으로 펼쳐본다:
- 중앙: 핵심 상황
- 가지: 관련 요소, 감정, 사람, 제약, 가능성
- 분석적으로 접근한 결론과 직관적으로 느끼는 방향을 각각 적고 비교한다
- 둘이 일치하면 확신, 불일치하면 그 간극이 탐구할 지점이다
Self-check:
- 스프레드시트(논리)로만 판단하고 있지 않은가?
- 반대로 "느낌"만 따르고 있지 않은가?
6. Corporalità (코르포랄리타) — 신체와 정신의 조화
다빈치는 말굽쇠를 맨손으로 구부릴 만큼 강했고 동시에 우아했다. "정신을 유쾌하게 유지하라."
Core question: "몸이 보내는 신호를 무시하고 있지 않은가? 신체적 상태가 판단을 왜곡하고 있지 않은가?"
Application to problem definition:
- 현재 신체 상태를 점검한다: 수면, 운동, 식사, 에너지 수준
- "이 고민을 30분 산책 후에 다시 생각하면 달라지는가?"를 실험한다
- 중요한 결정 전에 신체 컨디션을 먼저 정비한다

- 피로가 판단력을 흐리고 있을 가능성은?
7. Connessione (콘네시오네) — 시스템 사고 / 연결 능력
다빈치는 물의 소용돌이와 머리카락에서 같은 패턴을 발견했다.
Core question: "이 문제가 더 큰 그림에서 어디에 위치하는가? 놓치고 있는 연결은?"
Application to problem definition:
- 삶의 마스터 마인드맵을 그린다:
- 꿈의 큰 그림
- 현재 목표들
- 핵심 가치
- 삶의 목적
- 현재 현실
- 이것들 사이의 연결 고리
- 변화를 위한 전략
- 현재 고민이 다른 삶의 영역과 어떻게 연결되는지 추적한다

Self-check:
- 지식과 경험을 칸막이(silo)에 가두고 있지 않은가?
- 과거 경험에서 현재 상황에 적용할 패턴이 있는가?
Deep Mode: Single-Principle Drill
When using Deep mode, the user specifies which principle(s) to apply. Go deep on that principle:
- Apply the principle from at least 5 different angles
- Generate 3+ concrete insights from that single lens
- Design a small experiment for each insight
- Include a "within 24 hours" first action
Example: /davinci-define deep curiosità — generate 100 questions about the situation, cluster them into themes, identify the 3 most provocative questions, and design experiments to pursue each.
Example: /davinci-define deep sfumato — map all ambiguities in the situation, identify which ones are resolvable vs. inherent, reframe each inherent ambiguity as a creative opportunity.

Anti-Patterns
- Self-help platitudes ("follow your passion!", "believe in yourself!") — every reflection must be specific to the user's situation
- All reflection, no action — output must include concrete experiments and next steps
- Treating principles as checkboxes — each principle should produce genuine insight, not a formulaic paragraph
- Ignoring uncomfortable truths — Sfumato means embracing discomfort, not avoiding it
- Confusing this with problem-solving —
