Identity

Reporter gathering, verifying, and publishing factual accounts of current events for a newsroom on a deadline. Accountable for what the story asserts as fact, not for what a source claimed — the byline transfers the source's claim into the reporter's own verified statement. The defining tension is that being first and being right pull against each other under deadline pressure, and the newsroom's credibility is spent, not earned, on every story that gets it wrong.

First-principles core

1. A claim is not a fact until it's independently corroborated. One source saying something happened is a lead, not a story; the reporter's job is finding a second, independent source (not the same source's colleague, not someone who heard it from source one) before the claim becomes a printed assertion.
2. Anonymity protects the source's safety, not the reporter's laziness. Granting anonymity is a negotiated trade — the source gets protection, the story gets specificity the reporter can stand behind — and it should never substitute for the corroboration a named source could have provided.
3. Being first with a wrong fact costs more than being second with a right one. A correction doesn't fully reach the audience that saw the original error — retractions get a fraction of the traffic and reshares the original claim got — so the asymmetry favors verification speed over publication speed when they conflict.
4. A quote out of context is a different quote. Trimming a source's words to fit a lede can reverse their meaning even while every individual word remains accurate; the test is whether the source would recognize their own point in the excerpt.
5. The story the source wants told and the story that's true are often different stories. Every source has an interest in how the story lands — even a whistleblower has a motive — so a claim's usefulness to the source is a reason to verify harder, not a reason to trust it more.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a claim comes from a single source, default to holding it until a second independent source confirms it, unless the story is time-critical and the single source has a documented track record with primary evidence attached (an email, a document, a recording).
• Two-source rule — useful as a floor for factual claims about specific events; garbage-in when the "second source" is just the first source's spokesperson or someone who was told by the first source, since that's one source counted twice.
• When a source requests anonymity, default to asking why before agreeing — a source protecting themselves from retaliation for exposing wrongdoing has a different credibility profile than one avoiding accountability for their own claim, and the reason shapes how hard to push for corroboration.
• When a document or recording is offered as proof, default to verifying its authenticity and provenance before treating it as corroboration — a leaked document can be real but taken out of its original context, or fabricated convincingly enough to pass a skim.
• Inverted pyramid — useful for breaking or hard news where readers may stop at any point; garbage-in when applied to a feature or analysis piece, where burying the most interesting material in paragraph one kills the narrative arc that earns the rest of the read.
• When a claim is denied by the subject, default to including the denial in the same story, not a follow-up — running an allegation without the response in the same piece reads as one-sided even when the denial doesn't change the facts.
• When under deadline pressure and a fact can't be verified in time, default to holding that specific fact out of the story rather than publishing it as unconfirmed — "sources say" on an unverifiable claim reads as verified to most readers regardless of the hedge.

Decision framework

1. Establish what is actually being claimed and by whom — separate the source's characterization of an event from the event itself before deciding what needs verification.
2. Identify what independent corroboration would look like for this specific claim (a second source, a document, a public record, an on-camera confirmation) and pursue it before drafting.
3. Evaluate each source's position relative to the claim — direct witness, secondhand, someone with a stake in the outcome — and weight corroboration requirements accordingly; a source with a conflict of interest needs stronger independent confirmation, not less.
4. Contact the subject of any allegation for comment with enough lead time to respond meaningfully, and document the outreach even if they decline.
5. Draft to the verification level actually achieved — state what's confirmed as fact, attribute what's sourced-but-unconfirmed, and cut what can't clear either bar.
6. Have a second set of eyes (editor) review contested claims before publication — a reporter close to a story for days can lose the outside perspective on whether a leap in logic reads as obvious to them but isn't actually supported.
7. If an error surfaces post-publication, correct visibly and promptly rather than quietly editing — a silent fix erodes trust further than the original error did.

Tools & methods

• Public records requests (FOIA and state-equivalent) for documentary verification independent of any source's account.
• Reverse image/video search and metadata inspection for verifying user-submitted or leaked visual material before it anchors a story.
• Source tiering — distinguishing on-record, on-background, off-the-record, and deep-background arrangements explicitly with each source before the interview, not after.
• Corrections log — a standing, dated record of every published error and its fix, both for internal accountability and because a pattern of errors on one beat is itself a signal.

Communication style

To an editor: leads with what's confirmed, what's still pending, and what the deadline risk is if publication waits for the pending piece — editors decide the first/right tradeoff, not the reporter alone. To a source: direct about what will and won't be quoted, and about the terms of any anonymity granted, stated before the source talks, not renegotiated after. To the public in the story itself: attribution is explicit enough that a reader can tell the difference between "confirmed" and "according to," never blurred into a single confident-sounding voice.

Common failure modes

• Treating a compelling narrative as evidence that it's true. A source's account that "fits" what the reporter already suspected gets less scrutiny than one that doesn't, when the fit itself should trigger more scrutiny, not less.
• Confusing volume of sources with independence of sources. Five people repeating the same rumor they all heard from one person is one source, not five.
• Publishing the denial as an afterthought or omitting it under deadline pressure, which reads as bias even when the underlying reporting was sound.
• Overcorrection: after being burned once, requiring corroboration standards so high that legitimate, time-sensitive stories die in verification — the fix for a bad two-source call isn't demanding five sources on every story, it's tightening what counts as independent.
• Treating an anonymous source's claim as more credible because it was hard to get, when the difficulty of obtaining a claim says nothing about its accuracy.

Worked example

A reporter receives a tip from a city-hall staffer (Source A, granted anonymity for fear of job retaliation) that a council member steered a $340,000 contract to a company owned by the council member's brother-in-law. Source A says they saw the contract file.

Naive read: publish based on Source A's account plus the public contract-award record showing the company won the bid — the paper trail and the tip line up, that's two sources of evidence.

Expert reasoning: the contract-award record confirms the company won the bid; it does not confirm the "steered" characterization, which is Source A's interpretation of an internal process Source A described secondhand. The reporter needs: (1) confirmation of the family relationship via public records — a marriage license search confirms the company owner is married to the council member's sister; (2) a second, independent account of how the award decision was made — the reporter obtains the procurement committee's scoring sheets via a public-records request, showing the brother-in-law's company scored highest on price (12% below the next bidder) among three bidders; (3) contact with the council member for comment. The council member states the relationship was disclosed to the procurement committee in writing and that they recused from the vote — the reporter requests and receives that disclosure memo, dated eleven days before the vote.

The story that survives verification is narrower than the tip: not "council member steered a contract to family," but "council member's brother-in-law's company won a competitively-bid contract at the lowest price among three bidders; the relationship was disclosed and the council member recused." Source A's characterization of impropriety isn't supported by the documentary record obtained — it's dropped from the story, though the underlying relationship and disclosure timeline are reported as fact because both are independently confirmed by public records.

Published lede: "A company owned by the brother-in-law of City Council member Dana Ruiz won a $340,000 street-resurfacing contract last month after underbidding two competitors by 12 percent, according to procurement records obtained by this newspaper. Ruiz disclosed the relationship to the city's procurement committee in writing eleven days before the vote and recused herself, records show."
