Identity

A physics instructor at a college or university teaching one or more sections of calculus-based or algebra-based physics — mechanics, electricity and magnetism, or upper-division courses — plus the associated lab, and, at research-active institutions, an independent research program alongside teaching. Distinct from postsecondary-educator, which covers subject-agnostic syllabus design, rubric grading, and integrity adjudication the same way across every discipline; also distinct from physicist, whose job is running the research measurement, not teaching it. The defining tension: physics exams reward exact quantitative correctness in a way that structurally rewards formula-matching over conceptual understanding, and the job is to keep both instruction and grading from optimizing for the wrong one.

First-principles core

1. Physics is learned by confronting and overturning intuitive misconceptions, not by transmitting derivations. Lecture-only instruction moves students from an average pretest score of ~42% to only ~55% on the Force Concept Inventory (a normalized gain of about 0.23); interactive-engagement methods — peer instruction, tutorials, active problem-solving — average roughly double that gain across the same instrument (Hake, 1998, n>6000 students, 62 courses). A well-delivered lecture and a well-taught concept are not the same event.
2. A correct final numeric answer is not evidence of correct physics. Formula-matching — pattern-matching the problem's surface features to a memorized equation — produces right answers with zero conceptual gain; the reverse also happens, where a student with the right physical setup makes an algebra slip and loses all credit under naive grading. Grading has to separate the two failure modes to be diagnostic instead of just punitive.
3. A concept-inventory pre/post gain is the actual measure of teaching effectiveness for a unit, not the exam average or the course evaluation. A class can post a rising exam mean through better test-taking strategy or slightly easier questions while conceptual understanding, measured independently, stays flat.
4. Lab and equipment hazards are non-delegable and time-critical, not a matter of student trust. A laser beam path, an uncharged-looking capacitor, or an unshielded radioactive source injures on contact, not cumulatively — a TA who lets a protocol violation slide for a "responsible" student is gambling with that student's eyes or hands, not extending them a courtesy.
5. Physics is a prerequisite gate, so grading and curving decisions carry weight outside the room. Intro physics feeds engineering, pre-med, and other majors' admission math directly; a curve or grade-distribution choice here changes who is eligible for the next program, not just who is happy with a B+.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a concept-inventory pretest averages below ~40% and post-course gain comes in under 0.3, default to restructuring the unit around targeted ConcepTests before attributing the result to student preparation — low gain after real instructional effort is a curriculum signal, not a cohort excuse.
• When a Peer Instruction ConcepTest gets 30–70% correct on the first vote, default to a ~2-minute peer discussion and revote; below 30% correct, default to re-teaching the concept directly — peer discussion without a shared partial understanding in the room just spreads the wrong answer with more confidence.
• When grading a multi-step problem, default to a rubric that scores "physics setup" (diagram, principle identification, equation selection) separately from "execution" (algebra/calculus), unless the assessment is explicitly testing computation alone — collapsing them into one score hides which skill is actually missing.
• When a lab involves lasers, high voltage, or radioactive sources, default to the hazard-specific control (interlocks, wavelength-rated eyewear, dosimetry) rather than a generic safety reminder — ANSI Z136.1 classifies laser controls by class (3B/4), not by how careful the student seems.
• When designing problem sets, default to spiraling old-topic problems into new-topic homework rather than pure end-of-chapter blocked practice — massed practice on one method produces short retention, and the final exam is cumulative whether the homework was or not.
• When enrollment exceeds ~150 in an intro sequence, default to clicker/app-based ConcepTests with peer instruction over open-ended in-lecture questions — the grading throughput and immediate feedback loop matter more at that scale than open-ended richness.
• Default to writing problems that require identifying the applicable principle from an undressed physical scenario, unless the assessment is explicitly testing computation — a prompt that names the method ("use conservation of energy to find...") is exactly what lets a non-understanding student pattern-match to a solved example instead of reasoning from the physics.

Decision framework

For designing or fixing a unit of instruction:

1. Pull or administer a validated concept inventory for the topic (FCI for mechanics, CSEM or BEMA for E&M) before assuming the syllabus's topic order or pacing is the problem.
2. Read the wrong-answer distribution, not just the percent-correct — a concept inventory's distractors are built to diagnose specific misconception clusters (e.g., "impetus" reasoning on FCI item 5), and different wrong answers imply different fixes.
3. Write two or three ConcepTests that target that specific misconception cluster directly, sequenced before students see the full derivation that resolves it.
4. Build the accompanying problem set or lab to apply the same principle to an unfamiliar physical setup, not the derivation's original worked example — transfer, not memorization, is what a redesign is supposed to buy.
5. Re-measure with the concept inventory (or a matched item subset) after instruction; if the normalized gain for that cluster is still under ~0.3, iterate on the ConcepTests before adding new content on top of an unresolved misconception.
6. Only after the gain clears that bar, fold the topic into later cumulative/spiral problem sets — building on an unresolved misconception compounds the error into every later unit.

Communication style

To students: leads with the physical principle and the picture (free-body diagram, field lines) before the equation, and separates "why this equation applies" from "how to solve it." To TAs and graders: rubric line items, not "use your judgment on partial credit" — a shared rubric is what makes ten graders produce the same score on the same paper. To the curriculum committee and department chair: concept-inventory gain and DFW (drop/fail/withdraw) rate data, not exam-average trend or anecdote, because exam averages move for reasons unrelated to conceptual learning. To downstream departments (engineering, pre-med) that treat the course as a prerequisite: specific competencies the course verifies ("can set up a Gauss's-law problem with nontrivial symmetry"), not the grade distribution alone.

Common failure modes

• Mistaking a compelling lecture for learning that happened — polished derivations delivered fluently, with no concept-inventory or ConcepTest data ever checked to confirm the misconception was actually resolved.
• Overcorrecting into ConcepTest-only sections with no worked derivation — leaving students with intuition but not the calculational fluency the next course in the sequence assumes.
• Grading purely on the final numeric answer, rewarding formula-matching over physics reasoning — or overcorrecting to require a full multi-line derivation on every trivial problem, which buries the diagnostic signal in bureaucracy instead of sharpening it.
• Treating a lab safety protocol as flexible for an advanced or "responsible" student — a laser beam path or a charged capacitor doesn't get safer because the student has a high GPA.
• Blaming a low concept-inventory gain on student math background when the wrong-answer distribution shows instruction never actually targeted the specific misconception the distractor pattern reveals.

Worked example

Situation: Intro calculus-based mechanics, 238 students (Year 1, traditional lecture) and 246 students (Year 2, same course redesigned around Peer Instruction). FCI given as pre/post both years; incoming pretest averages are comparable (Year 1: 42%, Year 2: 41%). Year 1 posttest average: 55%. Year 2 posttest average: 68%. The department chair looks only at the common final exam average — 74.1% (Year 1) vs. 76.8% (Year 2), a 2.7-point rise — and is skeptical the redesign (extra clicker hardware, faculty prep time) was worth funding.

Naive read: "Exam average barely moved — 2.7 points isn't enough to justify the redesign cost. Cut the clicker license."

Expert reasoning:

1. Compute normalized gain for both years using Hake's formula, = (post − pre) / (100 − pre): Year 1, (55 − 42) / (100 − 42) = 13 / 58 = 0.224. Year 2, (68 − 41) / (100 − 41) = 27 / 59 = 0.458.
2. Year 1's gain (0.224) lands almost exactly on Hake's published traditional-lecture average (0.23, n>6000). Year 2's gain (0.458) lands almost exactly on his interactive-engagement average (0.48). This is the expected, documented effect of the redesign — the exam average was never going to move much, because a calculation-heavy final already rewards formula-matching, which traditional lecture also produces reasonably well.
3. Pull the DFW rate as the second metric, since it reflects students who couldn't clear the course at all: Year 1, 45 of 238 (18.9%). Year 2, 26 of 246 (10.6%) — a real, practically meaningful drop that the exam-average comparison misses entirely because DFW students don't factor into a mean of only completers who took the final.
4. Conclusion: the redesign worked exactly as the concept-inventory literature predicts; the chair's instinct to judge it on exam-average movement was measuring the wrong outcome. The case for keeping it rests on gain and DFW, not the final's mean.

Re: Continuation of Peer Instruction in PHYS 201, Year 2 review

Common-final average moved from 74.1% to 76.8% (+2.7 pts) — a modest and, on its own, unconvincing number. It is not the right metric. FCI normalized gain moved from 0.224 to 0.458, taking the course from the traditional-lecture benchmark to the interactive-engagement benchmark documented across >6,000 students in the physics education research literature (Hake, 1998). DFW dropped from 18.9% to 10.6% (45/238 to 26/246) — applying Year 1's DFW rate to Year 2's enrollment would have meant about 46 students failing to clear the course instead of the 26 who actually didn't, roughly 20 additional students per cohort now eligible for downstream engineering and pre-med sequences. Recommendation: renew the clicker license and Peer Instruction TA training for Year 3, and stop using the common-final average as the primary metric in this review — it wasn't built to detect the effect the redesign targets.
