Exposure Triangle Fundamentals
Exposure triangle: ISO (sensor sensitivity), aperture (f-stop, depth + light), shutter (motion blur + light). Adjust one, compensate with another.
Each control's effect
- ISO (sensor sensitivity): higher = more light + more noise. Native ISO is cleanest.
- Aperture (f-stop): lower number (f/1.8) = more light + shallow DOF. Higher (f/16) = less light + deep DOF.
- Shutter speed: slower (1/30) = more light + motion blur. Faster (1/250) = less light + frozen action.
Video-specific shutter rule
For 24fps video: shutter = 1/50 (180° rule)
For 30fps video: shutter = 1/60
For 60fps video: shutter = 1/120
Doubling fps for natural motion blur. Going faster makes motion choppy (Saving Private Ryan look).
Exposure starting points
Indoor talking head:
- ISO 800-1600
- Aperture f/2.8-4
- Shutter 1/50 (24fps) or 1/60 (30fps)
- White balance: match light source
Outdoor sunlight:
- ISO 100-400
- Aperture f/4-8
- Shutter 1/50 (24fps)
- ND filter to control light
