Required Answer Sections

Every LeetCode answer must include all sections below, in this order:

1. Answer Header — Difficulty, Topic, Pattern tag.
2. Problem Understanding — Plain language explanation of what is asked.
3. Hint — A guiding nudge toward the pattern without spoiling the solution. Shown by default; omit only if the user says "skip hint" or "just give solution".
4. Brute Force — Naive solution with code and complexity. Always before the optimized solution.
5. Approach — The optimized idea, key insight, and the "Why Not X?" rejection of obvious alternatives.
6. STL Toolbox — Which C++ containers/functions are used and exactly why.
7. Algorithm — Numbered step-by-step breakdown.
8. Code — Clean, accepted-style C++ inside class Solution.

Hint Mode

Always show a hint by default before the full solution. A good hint:

• Points toward the pattern without naming the exact algorithm.
• Poses a guiding question (e.g. "What if you remembered every number you've already seen?").
• Is 2–3 lines maximum.

Skip the hint only when the user explicitly says "skip hint", "no hint", or "just give solution".

Brute Force First Rule

Always show brute force before the optimized solution:

• Provide the naive C++ code (can be brief, but must compile correctly).
• State its time and space complexity.
• Explain in one sentence why it is insufficient.

This builds intuition — the user must understand what is being optimized and why.

Visual Dry Run Rules

Choose the dry run format based on problem type:

• Array / hash map → table with columns (Step, index, value, state, action).
• Two pointers → ASCII array with L and R markers moving across.
• Sliding window → ASCII array with [ and ] brackets showing the window.
• Binary tree → ASCII tree with traversal order annotated.
• Graph / BFS / DFS → ASCII adjacency list + queue/stack state per step.
• Linked list → ASCII nodes with arrows and pointer labels.
• Dynamic programming → filled DP table built row by row.

C++ Pitfalls to Always Check

After writing the solution, review for these before presenting:

• Signed / unsigned mismatch: nums.size() returns size_t. Cast to (int) in loop conditions.
• Integer overflow: use long long when summing or multiplying values near INT_MAX.
• Map [] vs .count(): operator[] inserts a default if the key is absent. Use .count() or .find() to check first.
• Uninitialized DP base cases: DP tables must have base cases explicitly set before filling.
• Off-by-one in binary search: use lo <= hi vs lo < hi correctly depending on the variant.
• Modifying a container while iterating it: copy indices or use erase carefully.
• auto iterator invalidation: after inserting into a vector, iterators may be invalid.
• Graph with 0-indexed vs 1-indexed nodes: confirm the node numbering before building the adjacency list.

Solution Quality Checklist

Before finalizing any answer, verify all of these:

• Answer header has difficulty, topic, and pattern tag.
• Hint is present (unless user skipped it).
• Brute force is shown before the optimized solution.
• Code uses the correct C++ LeetCode signature.
• "Why Not X?" rejects the most obvious alternative.
• STL Toolbox explains each container used.

Problem Understanding

Given an integer array nums and an integer target, return the indices of the two numbers that add up to target. Exactly one valid answer exists and the same element cannot be used twice.

💡 Hint

As you walk through the array, what if you remembered every number you have already seen, along with its index? For each new number, ask yourself: have I already seen exactly what I need to complete the target?

Brute Force

Check every pair of elements:

// O(n^2) time, O(1) space — too slow for large inputs
for (int i = 0; i < (int)nums.size(); i++)
    for (int j = i + 1; j < (int)nums.size(); j++)
        if (nums[i] + nums[j] == target)
            return {i, j};

This is correct but O(n²) — unacceptable when n can be up to 10⁴.

Approach

Use an unordered_map to store every number we have visited along with its index. For each new number, compute its complement and check if it already exists in the map — one pass, O(n).

Why Not Sorting + Two Pointers?

Sorting destroys the original indices, which we must return. We would need extra bookkeeping to recover them, adding complexity with no gain over the hash map approach.

STL Toolbox

• unordered_map<int, int> — O(1) average lookup and insert; maps number → index.

Algorithm

1. Create unordered_map<int, int> seen.
2. Loop through nums with index i.
3. Compute need = target - nums[i].
4. If need is in seen, return {seen[need], i}.
5. Otherwise store seen[nums[i]] = i and continue.

Line-by-Line Explanation

• unordered_map<int, int> seen: hash map — number to its index.
• for (int i = 0; i < (int)nums.size(); i++): cast to int avoids signed/unsigned warning.
• int need = target - nums[i]: the complement required to hit the target.
• if (seen.count(need)): O(1) check — did we see the complement in a previous step?
• return {seen[need], i}: the complement's index came earlier, current index is i.
• seen[nums[i]] = i: record this number so future iterations can find it.
• return {}: safe fallback; the problem guarantees a valid pair exists.

Dry Run

Input: nums = [2, 7, 11, 15], target = 9

⚠️ C++ Pitfalls

• Signed/unsigned mismatch: nums.size() is size_t. Always cast to (int) in loop conditions to prevent subtle comparison bugs.
• Using seen[need] to check existence: operator[] inserts a zero if need is absent, silently corrupting the map. Use .count(need) or .find(need) instead.

Complexity

• Time: O(n) — each element is processed exactly once.
• Space: O(n) — the map holds at most n entries.

Edge Cases

• Negative numbers: complement arithmetic works the same way.
• Duplicate values: both are stored with their own indices; no conflict.
• Answer near the end: the loop visits every element so the pair is always found.

🎤 Interview Tips

• Open with: "The brute force is O(n²) — check every pair. I can get this to O(n) with a hash map."
• When writing the map: "I'll trade O(n) space to gain O(n) time — one pass instead of two nested loops."
• When checking .count(): "I always check with .count() rather than operator[] to avoid silent insertion."
• Close with: "Edge cases — negatives are fine, duplicates are fine since I store indices, not values."
