Journal ranking / indexing
The user wants a journal's tier and indexing — 中科院分区 (CAS quartile), JCR
quartile (Q1–Q4), impact factor, and indexing status (SCIE / SSCI / EI / CSCD / CSSCI
/ Scopus). This is high-value for the user's audience, and high-risk: tier and IF
numbers are exactly what a model invents confidently. The cardinal rule: look it up
and cite the source + year — never state a 分区/IF from memory.
Step 1 — identify the journal
Get the focused item and its journal name:
zotero_get_open_reader_state (else zotero_get_selected_items) → the item.- The journal is the item's
publicationTitle field (read it via zot if needed).
If no journal is in scope, ask the user which journal, or accept a journal name / ISSN
they type.
Step 2 — look it up (do NOT recall from memory)
Find the ranking from an authoritative source, in this order:
- A pre-collected dataset, if the user has one wired (e.g. a
zot journal-rank
table / lookup tool, or a local 分区 dataset). Preferred when present — it's the
local-first, citable path.
- A search / web / academic lookup the user has wired into pi (web-search MCP,
publisher pages, JCR/中科院分区 references) — query by journal name and/or ISSN.
- None available — say so: "I can't look up the ranking without a dataset or a
search source wired — and I won't guess these numbers from memory." Stop there.
Whatever the source, report which source and which year (分区 is reassessed yearly
and CAS vs JCR differ; CAS also has 基础版 vs 升级版). A ranking without a year is
useless and misleading.
Step 3 — fill it in (optional, on request)
If the user wants it saved to the item:
- Preferred: tags via
zotero_apply_tags (if available) — e.g. 中科院一区,
JCR Q1, IF 12.3 (2023), SCIE. Tags are filterable in Zotero, which is the
point.
- Fallback: a note via
zotero_add_note_to_current_item — a short block with the
ranking, source, and year.
Confirm in ~1 line after writing; don't re-paste everything.
Anti-patterns (do NOT do these)
- Stating 分区 / IF from memory. This is the whole risk. If you didn't look it
up this turn from a real source, you don't know it. Refuse rather than guess.
- Dropping the year / version. Always say the year and whether it's CAS or JCR
(and 基础版/升级版 if known). Rankings change; an undated number is wrong-by-default.
- Conflating systems. 中科院分区 (1–4 区) ≠ JCR quartile (Q1–Q4) ≠ impact factor
≠ indexing (SCIE/SSCI/…). Keep them distinct; don't translate one into another.
- Writing unverified values to the item. Only tag/note a ranking you actually
sourced this turn. A wrong tag is worse than no tag.
- Reimplementing zot. If a dataset/lookup belongs in the data layer, that's zot's
job; this skill orchestrates the lookup and writes the result back.
