Assessment Before Remonstrance

1. Evaluate Ruler's Receptiveness

   • Has ruler rejected previous advice?
   • Are there signs of tyranny?

2. Choose Appropriate Method

   • Direct speech for receptive rulers
   • Indirect methods for resistant rulers

Remonstrance Techniques

Method 1: Metaphorical Instruction

Example: 伊尹 using cooking to explain governance

• Use familiar concepts to explain abstract principles
• "以滋味说汤，致于王道" (Use flavors to explain the Way of Kings)
• Connect practical knowledge to governance principles

Method 2: Omen Interpretation

Example: 祖己 interpreting the pheasant omen

• When strange occurrences happen, interpret as calls for reform
• "王勿忧，先修政事" (King, do not worry; first repair governance)
• Frame warnings as opportunities for improvement

Method 3: Direct Appeal

Example: 比干's fatal remonstrance

• Speak truth regardless of consequence
• "为人臣者，不得不以死争" (As a subject, must contend even unto death)
• Accept martyrdom if necessary
