Instructions

1. Define the Core Job To Be Done

   • What economic problem is this company solving?
   • What is the current budget line item or workaround that funds this today?

2. Identify Comparable or Alternative Spending List:

   • Direct competitors
   • Indirect competitors
   • Status quo solutions (internal teams, consultants, manual labor, spreadsheets, agencies, etc.)
   • Adjacent budget categories that could reasonably be reallocated

3. Quantify the Spending Pool Estimate:

   • Number of ICP buyers in scope
   • Annual spend per buyer on comparable or substitute solutions
   • Current total category spend

4. Show: Low case, Base case, High case

5. Calculate TAM

   TAM = (# of ICP buyers in defined geography) x (Current annual spend on comparable or alternative solutions per buyer)

   Do NOT assume:

   • 100% market penetration
   • New budgets being created from scratch
   • Unrealistic price expansion

   TAM must reflect existing economic activity, not theoretical adoption.

6. Classify the TAM Based on the base-case TAM, classify the market scale:

   • <$250M → Niche / Venture-Unlikely
   • $250M-$1B → Small but viable
   • $1B-$10B → Scalable venture market
   • $10B+ → Large strategic market

7. Stress Test the TAM Identify:

   • The single biggest assumption driving TAM
   • What data would validate or invalidate it
   • How TAM changes if that assumption is 50% wrong

8. Optional: Expansion TAM Identify adjacent budget categories that could realistically be unlocked after initial traction, and calculate Expanded TAM separately.
