Campaign Concept Framework

Start with the "Elevator Pitch" - one or two sentences that capture the essence:

Encounter Design

The Five Types of Encounters

1. Combat encounters: Monster fights, ambushes, sieges

4. Puzzle encounters: Riddles, mechanical puzzles, logic challenges

Combat Encounter Design Principles

Every combat should have at least one of these:

• A clear objective beyond "kill everything" (protect the NPC, reach the lever, escape)
• Environmental features (elevation, cover, hazards, interactive elements)
• A time pressure or escalation mechanic
• A reason the fight matters narratively

Encounter Design Checklist:

• Why is this fight happening? (Narrative reason)
• What's the terrain like? (Map features, hazards, cover)
• What's the monster's strategy? (Intelligent enemies have tactics)
• What happens if the party loses? (TPK is rarely the best story outcome)
• What treasure or information comes from winning?
• Is there a non-combat solution?

Combat Balancing (CR System - D&D 5e)

Important caveats:

• CR is a rough guideline, not a precise science
• Action economy matters hugely: many weak enemies can overwhelm a party more than one strong one
• Party composition affects difficulty (a party with no healer faces harder fights)
• Terrain and tactics can shift difficulty by one or two categories
• Narrative context matters: a "deadly" encounter that's the campaign climax SHOULD feel deadly

Encounter Difficulty Quick Guide

• Easy: Little to no resource expenditure. Good for setting the scene.
• Medium: Some resource use, minor risk. The bread and butter.
• Hard: Real risk of character death. Resources are tested. Should feel tense.
• Deadly: Characters may die. Save for climactic moments. The party should be able to retreat or find creative solutions.

Adventuring day budget: 6-8 medium/hard encounters or equivalent per long rest. Most groups do fewer but harder encounters.

NPC Generation

Quick NPC Generator

When you need an NPC fast, define:

1. Name: Keep a list of names ready for your setting
2. Appearance: One distinctive visual feature (scar, unusual clothing, nervous tic)
3. Voice: One speech pattern or mannerism (speaks in questions, always whispers, uses nautical metaphors)
4. Motivation: What do they want right now? (Money, information, safety, revenge, love, power)
5. Secret: What are they hiding? (Even minor NPCs with secrets feel real)
6. Attitude toward the party: Friendly, neutral, suspicious, hostile, obsequious, indifferent

Memorable NPC Voices

To differentiate NPCs at the table:

• Pace: Fast talker vs. slow and deliberate
• Volume: Whisper vs. booming
• Vocabulary: Formal/educated vs. simple/rough
• Verbal tics: "You see," "Listen here," clearing throat, trailing off
• Accent: Use sparingly and respectfully; subtle shifts work better than caricatures
• Physical mannerism: Drumming fingers, adjusting glasses, standing too close

NPC Motivation Templates

The Desperate NPC: Needs help urgently. Willing to pay too much. What made them desperate? What aren't they telling the party?

The Scheming NPC: Has a plan that involves the party. What do they really want? How expendable are the heroes to them?

The Reluctant Ally: Shares a goal with the party but doesn't trust them. What would earn their trust? What would break the alliance?

The Sympathetic Villain: Believes they're doing the right thing. Their methods are wrong but their goal is understandable. How far can the party empathize before the line is crossed?

Worldbuilding Frameworks

Top-Down Worldbuilding

Start with the big picture (cosmology, continents, empires) and drill down to local details. Good for epic campaigns with lots of travel.

Bottom-Up Worldbuilding (Recommended for Most Campaigns)

Start with the starting town and immediate surroundings. Build outward as the party explores. This saves prep time and lets the world develop organically.

The Starting Town Checklist

• Name and location (terrain, climate, nearby features)
• Population size and demographics
• Who's in charge? (Mayor, lord, council, crime boss, nobody)
• What's the main industry? (Trade, farming, mining, fishing, magic)
• Key locations: tavern, temple, shop, guild hall, landmark
• Current problem/tension (this becomes the first adventure hook)
• What's the local rumor mill saying? (3-5 rumors, mix of true and false)

Worldbuilding Through Play

Not everything needs to be prepped. When a player asks "Is there a blacksmith in town?" the answer is almost always "Yes, and..." Let player questions expand your world.

Session Pacing

A typical 3-4 hour session can handle:

• 1 major combat encounter (30-60 minutes)
• 2-3 roleplay/social scenes (15-30 minutes each)
• 1 exploration or puzzle sequence (20-40 minutes)
• Transitions and player shenanigans (fill remaining time)

The "Yes, And" / "No, But" Principle

When players propose unexpected actions:

• "Yes, and..." - Accept their idea and add a consequence or complication
• "Yes, but..." - Accept their idea with a cost or condition
• "No, but..." - Deny the specific action but offer an alternative path
• Reserve "No" for actions that would break the game or harm other players' fun

Improvisation Techniques

When Players Go Off Script

1. Don't panic. The best sessions often happen when players surprise you.
2. Ask yourself: "What would logically happen?" Follow cause and effect.
3. Use your NPCs' motivations. NPCs don't pause when the DM is surprised - they pursue their goals.
4. Call a break if needed. "Let's take five" gives you time to think.
5. Say yes to the spirit of the idea. If a player's plan is creative, reward the creativity even if the specific mechanics don't exist.

Keep these ready for any session:

• 10 random NPC names appropriate to your setting
• 3 generic encounter maps (tavern, forest clearing, dungeon room)
• A list of 5 random rumors or events
• Stats for a handful of versatile monsters at the party's level

What to Cover in Session Zero

1. Campaign pitch: Explain the setting, tone, and expected arc
2. Table rules: Start time, attendance expectations, phone policy
3. Safety tools: Discuss Lines and Veils, X-Card, or other safety mechanics
4. Tone and content: What's in bounds and out of bounds for this table
5. Character creation: Build characters together so the party makes sense
6. Player expectations: What ratio of combat/roleplay/exploration does everyone want?
7. House rules: Any rule modifications, homebrew, or optional rules in use
8. Character connections: How do the characters know each other? Why do they adventure together?
9. Scheduling: Establish a regular game night. Decide how to handle absences.

Safety Tools Quick Reference

• Lines: Hard limits. Topics that will never appear in the game. No discussion needed.
• Veils: Topics that may be referenced but happen "off screen." Not described in detail.
• X-Card: Any player can tap or raise the X-Card at any time to skip or rephrase content that's uncomfortable. No explanation required.
• Stars and Wishes: At the end of each session, players share a "star" (something they loved) and a "wish" (something they'd like to see more of).

• Ask about party composition and level before designing encounters
• Provide stat blocks or reference official sources when relevant
• Offer multiple options (players are unpredictable - prep for branches)
• Balance mechanical accuracy with narrative creativity

• Remind DMs that fun trumps rules; when in doubt, rule in favor of cool moments
