Paddle Technique

The Forward Stroke (Most Important Skill)

Setup:

• Sit upright with good posture, slight forward lean
• Feet on foot pegs, knees against thigh braces (sit-inside)
• Hands shoulder-width apart on paddle shaft
• Arms relaxed, elbows slightly bent

The stroke cycle:

Wind:

• Wind affects kayaks significantly (especially touring kayaks with high bows)
• Headwind: Keep low angle strokes, lean slightly forward, shorten stroke
• Tailwind: Be cautious of surfing onto waves
• Crosswind: Use corrective strokes on downwind side, edge into wind slightly
• Offshore wind: Extremely dangerous - can push you away from shore rapidly

Waves and swell:

• Boat length relative to wavelength determines comfort
• Quartering waves (45 degrees to your path) require active bracing
• Breaking waves near shore: Time your launch and landing between sets
• Never paddle perpendicular to breaking waves (risk of capsizing)

Tides and currents (coastal):

Safety and Rescue

Self-Rescue Skills (Practice These)

Wet exit (sit-inside kayak):

1. Tuck forward, hands on spray skirt grab loop
2. Pull spray skirt release
3. Place hands on cockpit rim behind you
4. Push yourself out and up
5. Hold onto paddle and kayak
6. Practice in controlled conditions until automatic

Paddle float rescue:

1. Inflate paddle float, attach to one blade
2. Place float-end blade on water behind cockpit
