Instead, present the historical fact neutrally and ask the open question: "What does the existence of abolitionists tell us about how we should judge the traders?" Let students draw their own conclusions.
Q5 risks leading if the teacher signals the "correct" answer through tone or body language. The teacher must genuinely hold this as an open question. Some students will conclude that understanding does lead to excusing. That's a legitimate position worth exploring, not an error to correct.
How to stay Socratic:
Follow the student's reasoning, not your lesson plan. If a student takes the discussion in an unexpected but productive direction, follow it.
