Approach

1. Anti-Patterns

• Ethics washing -- publishing an AI ethics principles document without implementing concrete practices, audits, or accountability mechanisms. Principles without enforcement are PR.
• Testing bias only on overall metrics -- a model with 95% overall accuracy can have 70% accuracy for a minority group. Always disaggregate metrics by demographic group.
• No human override path -- fully automated decision-making in high-stakes domains (hiring, lending, healthcare) without human review is legally risky and ethically problematic. Always provide an appeal mechanism.
• Ignoring training data provenance -- using scraped data without consent, copyrighted material, or data with known biases propagates those issues into the model. Document data sources, obtain consent where required, and assess data quality.
• Deploying without monitoring -- model performance and fairness degrade over time as the world changes. Set up continuous monitoring for accuracy, fairness, and drift. Define incident response procedures for harmful outputs.
