Logseq Flashcards Skill

Logseq has a built-in spaced repetition system. Any block tagged with #card becomes a flashcard. Logseq uses the SM-2 algorithm to schedule reviews.

Basic Card Syntax

The simplest card is a block with #card and a child block as the answer:

- What is the capital of France? #card
  - Paris

The parent block is the front of the card. The child block(s) are the back.

Cloze Deletion Cards

Use {{cloze text}} to hide specific words or phrases:

- The capital of France is {{cloze Paris}} #card

Multiple clozes in one block create one card per hidden item:

- {{cloze Photosynthesis}} converts {{cloze sunlight}} into glucose #card

Each {{cloze}} item is tested separately on the same card.

Multi-line Answer Cards

Child blocks can have multiple levels:

- Explain the 3 branches of US government #card
  - Legislative (Congress): makes laws
  - Executive (President): enforces laws
  - Judicial (Supreme Court): interprets laws

Cards with Context

You can add hints or extra context after the answer block:

- What does SOLID stand for in software design? #card
  - Single responsibility, Open/closed, Liskov substitution, Interface segregation, Dependency inversion
    - Mnemonic: "Some Old Ladies In Denver"

Card Properties

When you review a card, Logseq automatically adds these scheduling properties to the block:

- What is photosynthesis? #card
  card-last-interval:: 28.3
  card-repeats:: 4
  card-ease-factor:: 2.66
  card-next-schedule:: 2024-02-08T10:00:00.000Z
  card-last-reviewed:: 2024-01-11T10:00:00.000Z
  card-last-score:: 5
  - The process by which plants use sunlight to convert CO2 and water into glucose and oxygen

Do not edit these properties manually. Logseq manages them automatically.

Organizing Cards

Tag cards with additional context tags:

- What is the time complexity of quicksort? #card #algorithms #cs
  - Average: O(n log n), Worst: O(n²)

Group related cards under a parent block:

- ## French Vocabulary
  - "Bonjour" means hello #card #french
  - "Merci" means thank you #card #french
  - "Au revoir" means goodbye #card #french

Reviewing Cards

Open the card review mode with:

• Click the graduation cap icon in the sidebar
• Use the /cards command
• Navigate to a page and click "Start reviewing"

You can also create a filtered deck by page or tag:

- {{cards #algorithms}}

This embeds a card review session filtered to a specific topic.

Card Deck by Topic

You can create filtered card decks scoped to a page or tag:

- {{cards [[Biology]]}}
- {{cards #biology}}

The {{cards}} macro accepts a page reference or tag. All blocks on that page (or tagged with that tag) that have #card will appear in the review session. To review cards matching multiple criteria, organize them on a dedicated page and use {{cards [[page name]]}}.

You can also combine {{cards}} with a page reference to specific flashcard collections:

- {{cards [[Biology: Cell Division]]}}

Here is a full example of a study page with multiple card types:

- ## Cell Cycle

Tips

• Keep card fronts short and specific. One fact per card is ideal.
• Avoid cards that require long lists as answers. Break them into separate cards.
• Use cloze deletions when you want to test recall of specific terms within a sentence.
• Add context tags (#biology, #history, #spanish) so you can review by subject.
• Review cards regularly. Even 5 minutes per day compounds over time.
• Do not delete cards you have reviewed. Logseq needs the scheduling data to space reviews correctly.
