Become as uninteresting as a grey rock — emotionally flat and informationally sparse — to deprive a manipulative or high-conflict individual of the reactions they seek, reducing their incentive to target you.
Why This Is Best Practice

Step 1: Assess fit
Grey rock is indicated when ALL of the following are true:
- The person consistently responds to your emotional disclosures, personal news, or vulnerability with criticism, mockery, boundary violations, or control attempts
- You cannot realistically exit the relationship in the near term (shared custody, same workplace, mandatory family events)
- The conflict is not resolvable through dialogue — previous attempts at direct communication have been met with denial, deflection, or escalation
If ANY of these are false, use design-conflict-de-escalation-plan (willing counterpart) or run-motivational-interviewing (ambivalent person) instead.
Stop immediately and seek professional help if:
- The person has a history of physical violence
- You are in an acute safety situation
- You are in active legal proceedings where your demeanor may be observed or recorded
Step 2: Reduce your information surface before interactions
Manipulators need raw material. Cut off supply in advance:
- Stop sharing: future plans, financial changes, relationship developments, emotional struggles, opinions about mutual contacts
- Limit visible emotional state: avoid interactions immediately after stressful events
- Close secondary channels: direct messages, mutual contacts used as proxy information sources, social media the person monitors
- Brief others who might share your information: "Please don't mention X to [person]"
Step 3: Execute — factual, brief, neutral during interactions
During the interaction itself:

Tone: flat, slightly tired, minimally engaged. Not hostile — hostility is still a reaction and confirms you are engaged.
Duration: end interactions as quickly as the context allows. "I need to get back to work." "I have to take this call."
Step 4: Maintain consistency — inconsistency extends the behavior
Variable-ratio schedules reinforce behavior most powerfully (Skinner, 1938). If you apply grey rock 80% of the time and react emotionally 20% of the time, the person learns that persistence eventually yields a reaction — which intensifies the targeting.
Consistency requirements:
- Grey rock every interaction, not just when you remember
- If you slip and react emotionally, do not apologize or re-engage — return to grey rock at the next opportunity without comment
- Consistency over weeks produces the clearest signal; expect a brief escalation phase before de-escalation (extinction burst)
Step 5: Pair with an exit plan
Grey rock is a protective bridge, not a permanent solution. Sustained use under high-conflict conditions is psychologically taxing. Use the space it creates to build toward:
- Reducing contact frequency (schedule fewer interactions, use written channels only)
- No-contact or low-contact if circumstances allow
- Parallel parenting plan (legally structured, interaction-minimizing custody arrangement)
- Employment change if the situation is workplace-based
- Ongoing support: therapist familiar with narcissistic abuse recovery
Rules
- Grey rock ≠ stonewalling in a mutual relationship. Stonewalling in a reciprocal relationship is harmful (Gottman research). Grey rock applies only to one-directional manipulation patterns — not to partners, friends, or colleagues in genuine mutual relationships.
- Do not announce you are grey rocking. Announcing it gives the person a new lever ("you're being cold", "you're manipulating me"). The technique works by being invisible.
- Expect an extinction burst. When the reinforcement disappears, manipulators frequently escalate before stopping — increased contact attempts, more provocative statements, new tactics. This is normal; maintain grey rock through it.
- Protect your emotional processing outside the relationship. Grey rock requires suppressing visible emotional response during interactions. Process those emotions in therapy, journaling, or with trusted others — not inside the high-conflict relationship.
Common Mistakes
Partial grey rock. Sharing emotional reactions in some interactions while suppressing them in others teaches the person that persistence yields reward. Apply consistently or not at all.
Over-explaining the technique to the person. Any reaction — including explaining your strategy — is supply. Say nothing about the approach.
Using grey rock with willing parties. Applying emotional flatness to a genuine partner, friend, or colleague who is trying to connect is harmful and constitutes stonewalling. Grey rock has a specific indication: one-directional manipulation. Assess first.
Treating grey rock as the end goal. The goal is safety and eventual exit or reduced contact. Grey rock applied indefinitely in a high-stress situation leads to emotional numbing and burnout. It is a bridge.

When NOT to Use
- Physical safety risk: If the person has a history of physical violence, grey rock can trigger dangerous escalation. Physical safety takes priority — seek professional safety planning and legal protection.
- Active legal proceedings: Appearing emotionally flat or disengaged in custody evaluations, depositions, or mediation can be misread as indifference or hostility. Consult a family law attorney before applying grey rock in legally observed settings.
- Genuine mutual relationships: Grey rock is not conflict avoidance for reciprocal relationships where both parties are invested. Use

- Acute mental health crisis in the other person: If the other person is in crisis (suicidal ideation, psychotic episode), emotional flatness is contraindicated. Prioritize safety intervention.
