Steps

1. Observe systematically, not reactively

The first 15 minutes of a period are the diagnostic window:

• Watch: where is space appearing that your plan didn't anticipate?
• Watch: which opponent players are creating problems? Which of yours are struggling?
• Watch: is the tactical plan working structurally but being executed poorly, or is the plan itself wrong?

Use a simple observation sheet or systematic mental checklist — coaches who watch emotionally (reacting to every mistake) miss the structural patterns. If you have an analyst on staff, get their data by the 15-20 minute mark.

2. Separate plan failure from execution failure

The most critical diagnostic question before making an adjustment:

• Plan failure: the tactical approach is being outperformed by the opponent's structure — the fundamental approach needs to change
• Execution failure: the plan is sound but players are making technical or decision-making errors — coaching the execution, not changing the plan

Premature plan changes in response to execution failures confuse players and undermine their confidence in the system. Only change the plan when the plan is genuinely the problem.

3. Prioritize the highest-leverage adjustment

Identify the one change that would have the largest impact on the outcome:

• Personnel adjustment: one player is being reliably exploited or is ineffective — substitution or position swap
• Shape adjustment: the opposition formation is creating consistent gaps — change defensive or offensive structure
• Strategic adjustment: the game situation (score, time remaining) requires a different risk profile — more direct, more possession, different pressing trigger

Make one primary adjustment — then see if it works before making a second.

4. Deliver adjustments at stoppages with precision

Halftime or between-period adjustments:

• Time allocation: use the first half of the break for physiological recovery (hydration, passive rest) and the second half for tactical input
• Message structure: (1) what the team did well that must continue; (2) the single most important tactical adjustment; (3) who is responsible for what change; (4) a brief motivational close
• Length: 5-7 min maximum for the tactical component — less is more; athletes cannot process 15 tactical changes
• Individual conversations: address individual adjustments privately (the midfielder who needs to track differently) before the full-group talk

During-play adjustments:

• Use a clear signal system that players recognize from practice (hand signals, code words)
• Make one adjustment at a time — players who receive multiple simultaneous instructions during play execute none of them

5. Use substitutions tactically, not emotionally

Substitution decision criteria:

• Performance: player is clearly below required level (fatigue, injury, form collapse)
• Tactical: substitute offers a specific tactical capability not currently on the field
• Game state: scoreline + time remaining requires a different profile (defensive vs. attacking)

Avoid reactive substitutions after a single mistake — it signals to the player (and team) that mistakes are not tolerated, creating risk-averse behavior.

6. Review decisions post-game

After competition:

• What adjustments were made and why?
• Which worked? Which didn't?
• What would you do differently with the same information?

Build a personal adjustment log. Elite coaches maintain pattern libraries of situations and effective responses.

Common Mistakes

• Making tactical changes based on the scoreline, not the game: Trailing by one goal with 70 minutes remaining is not a crisis. Tactical panic before the game reveals its pattern leads to incoherent play.
• Too many simultaneous adjustments: More than 1-2 clear changes at halftime overloads working memory. Athletes revert to pre-game habits under pressure.
• Not making necessary adjustments because of sunk-cost commitment to the plan: If the evidence shows the plan is failing, adjust. Stubbornness is not confidence.

When NOT to Use
