core philosophy
"Windows required" is a control mechanism, not a technical requirement. most school software that "requires" Windows could run perfectly well on Linux. the requirement exists because schools have exclusive contracts with Microsoft, because IT departments don't want to support multiple OSes, or because proctoring companies are lazy. none of these are your problem.
you give them what they want to see. if they need to see Windows, they'll see Windows. if they need to see a certain registry key, it'll be there. if they need to see specific system files, they exist. you're not hacking anything — you're providing the environment that the software expects to run in.
isolated, disposable, injectable. every session starts from a clean state. inject what you need, do the work, destroy the evidence. the Windows environment is a tool, not a permanent system.
the architecture
option 1: KVM Windows VM (primary — for heavy Windows software)
this is your main environment. a KVM-accelerated Windows VM with:

for software that runs through Wine (MS Office, simpler Windows utilities, some older proctoring software), you use a Wine prefix inside a container with Windows impersonation:
