# reminders-cli A CLI for Apple Reminders on macOS: list, add, edit, complete, postpone and delete reminders from the terminal or a script, with JSON output and stable reminder IDs. ```console brew install udondan/software/reminders-cli ``` ## About this project This project builds on [keith/reminders-cli](https://github.com/keith/reminders-cli), with thanks to Keith Smiley and its contributors for the original work. It adds features such as JSON output with structured errors, pretty output, batch operations, repeating reminders, `today`/`overdue`/`upcoming` shortcuts, `postpone`, list management and a `doctor` command for access problems. See the [changelog](CHANGELOG.md) for details. ## Usage ### Show all lists ```console $ reminders show-lists Soon (2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C) 12 open, 3 overdue Eventually (7E1F2A3B-4C5D-6E7F-8A9B-0C1D2E3F4A5B) 4 open Someday (9F0A1B2C-3D4E-5F60-7182-93A4B5C6D7E8) 0 open ``` "Open" counts the reminders that are not completed; "overdue" counts those among them whose due date has passed, the same definition `show --overdue` uses, and it is only shown when it is not zero. Completed reminders are not counted by default, because fetching them is noticeably slower on a store that has been in use for a while. Anywhere a list name is accepted — `show`, `show-all`, `add`, `complete`, `uncomplete`, `edit`, `postpone`, `delete`, `delete-list` — a list ID works too, which is useful for scripting against a list whose name might change or contains characters that are awkward on the command line. For interactive use, the list argument doesn't have to be the exact name either. It's resolved by trying, in order: an exact ID, an exact name, a case-insensitive name, and finally a case-insensitive substring of a name. So `reminders show soon` and `reminders show even` both work with the lists above. Exact matches always win, so scripts that pass full names or IDs are unaffected. A fragment that matches several lists is an error, never a guess: ```console $ reminders show-lists Work (2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C) 12 open, 3 overdue Work – Side projects (7E1F2A3B-4C5D-6E7F-8A9B-0C1D2E3F4A5B) 4 open $ reminders show wor Error: Multiple reminders lists match 'wor': Work, Work – Side projects Suggestion: Be more specific, or pass the list's ID from 'reminders show-lists' ``` (`reminders show work` does resolve to `Work`, because the whole-name match is tried before the substring match.) `new-list` always creates exactly the name you give it; no fuzzy matching applies there. `delete-list` skips the substring step: it only accepts an ID or a whole name (case doesn't matter), see [Delete a list](#delete-a-list). ### Show reminders on a specific list ```console $ reminders show Soon 2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C: Write README 44C111DE-0B69-4E96-8C93-6A5D0A6C2A17: Ship reminders-cli ``` Each reminder's own stable identifier is shown as the leading prefix — the same kind of ID as the list identifiers above. This is what you pass to `complete`, `uncomplete`, `edit`, `postpone`, and `delete` to act on a specific reminder; unlike a list position, it keeps pointing at the same reminder even if the list changes in between. You don't have to type the whole ID: a case-insensitive prefix of at least 4 characters is enough as long as it identifies exactly one reminder on the list, so `reminders complete Soon 44c1` completes "Ship reminders-cli" above. A prefix that matches several reminders is reported as `reminder_ambiguous` together with the matching IDs and titles, and a prefix shorter than 4 characters never matches anything (an exact full ID always does). ### Pretty output For reading in a terminal, `show`, `show-all`, `today`, `overdue` and `upcoming` accept `--format pretty`: one section per list with open, overdue and completed counts, and aligned columns for due date, priority, repeat, flag, notes and the first 8 characters of the ID (enough to pass to `complete`, `edit` and friends). ```console $ reminders show Soon --include-completed --format pretty Soon (3 open, 1 overdue, 1 completed) ───────────────────────────────────── ○ Ship reminders-cli 2d overdue !!! ↻ weekly 📝 44C111DE ○ Contribute to open source in 3h B3D8E2A1 ○ Read a book F7B2C6E5 ✓ Write README done Mon 2A29C8B1 ``` - `○` is an open reminder, `✓` a completed one. Due dates are relative (`2d overdue`, `today`, `in 3h`, `tomorrow`, `in 3d`) and fall back to `Oct 4` beyond a week, `Oct 4 2027` in another year. Priority is `!`, `!!` or `!!!`, and `📝` marks a reminder with notes. - `--verbose`/`-v` shows the first 60 characters of the notes under each title instead. It is only accepted together with `--format pretty`. - Colours (red for overdue, yellow for due today, blue/yellow/red for priorities) are used only when stdout is a terminal and [`NO_COLOR`](https://no-color.org) is not set; piped output keeps the same layout without escape codes. - Set `REMINDERS_FORMAT=pretty` (or `plain`/`json`) to change the default format of these commands. An explicit `--format` always wins, and errors are still printed in plain text. `pretty` output may change between releases; scripts should use `--format plain` or `--format json`, whose output does not change with this option. ### Complete an item on a list ```console $ reminders complete Soon 2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C Completed 'Write README' $ reminders show Soon 44C111DE-0B69-4E96-8C93-6A5D0A6C2A17: Ship reminders-cli ``` `complete`, `uncomplete`, `edit`, `postpone`, and `delete` also accept `--format json` to print the affected reminder as JSON instead of the plain-text confirmation shown above, `new-list --format json` prints the created list, and `delete-list --format json` prints the deleted list. Errors are never printed to stdout; see [Errors](#errors). Dates in a reminder's JSON are UTC (`dueDate`, `startDate`, `nextDueDate`, `completionDate`, `creationDate`, `lastModified`). `dueDate`, `nextDueDate` and `completionDate` also come as `dueDateLocal`, `nextDueDateLocal` and `completionDateLocal`: the same instant in the machine's time zone with its offset, so a reminder due on Sept 15 with no time reads `"dueDate": "2026-09-14T22:00:00Z"` but `"dueDateLocal": "2026-09-15T00:00:00+02:00"` in CEST. `isAllDay` (present with a due date) tells a date-only reminder from one due at midnight. ### Act on several reminders at once `complete`, `uncomplete` and `delete` take any number of IDs (or prefixes), as separate arguments or comma-separated. `edit` and `postpone` take a comma-separated list in their single ID argument. If one of them is missing or ambiguous, or can't be changed (such as `postpone --next-weekday` on a reminder without a due date), the command fails with that error and leaves all of them untouched. Naming the same reminder twice acts on it once. Plain output prints one confirmation line per reminder. With `--format json`, a single ID still prints one object, while several IDs, a comma-separated list, or `-` always print an array, even when standard input holds only one ID. It requires the reminder to already have a due date. ### Delete an item on a list ```console $ reminders delete Soon 2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C Deleted 'Write README' $ reminders show Soon 44C111DE-0B69-4E96-8C93-6A5D0A6C2A17: Ship reminders-cli ``` `delete` looks a reminder up by ID regardless of its completion state, so a reminder that's already been completed can be deleted the same way, without any special-casing. With `--format json` the deleted reminder is printed as JSON, so a script can keep a record of what it removed: ```console $ reminders delete Soon 2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C --format json { "externalId" : "2A29C8B1-3D0F-4A9E-9C8D-5B6E7F8A9B0C", "isCompleted" : false, "list" : "Soon", "listId" : "9E1F1D3B-9C63-4B2E-A7F2-5C1B7E1E8A44", "priority" : 0, "title" : "Write README" } ``` ### Create a list ```console $ reminders new-list Groceries Created new list 'Groceries'! ``` When lists live in several accounts (for example iCloud and Exchange), pick one with `--source iCloud`. ### Delete a list Deleting a list deletes **every reminder on it**, completed or not. Without `--confirm`, nothing is deleted: `delete-list` says what would be removed and exits with status `13` (`confirmation_required`): ```console $ reminders delete-list Groceries Error: 'Groceries' contains 14 reminders (3 completed). Deleting the list deletes all of them. Suggestion: Re-run with --confirm to delete. $ reminders delete-list Groceries --confirm Deleted list 'Groceries' (14 reminders) ``` With `--format json`: ```console $ reminders delete-list Groceries --confirm --format json { "calendarIdentifier" : "9E1F1D3B-9C63-4B2E-A7F2-5C1B7E1E8A44", "deleted" : true, "reminderCount" : 14, "title" : "Groceries" } ``` Because a wrong guess would delete the wrong reminders, the list must be given by its ID or its whole name (case doesn't matter). A part of a name is `list_not_found`, and two lists with the same name are `list_ambiguous`; pass the ID from `show-lists` then. Put it after `--`, which ends the options: ```console $ reminders add Soon --due-date tomorrow -- "- not an option" Added reminder '- not an option' to list 'Soon' ``` ### Add a repeating reminder ```console reminders add Soon Weekly review --due-date "monday 9am" --repeat weekly reminders add Soon Pay rent --due-date "2026-09-01" --repeat monthly --repeat-until "2027-09-01" reminders add Soon Water the plants --due-date "tomorrow" --repeat daily --repeat-interval 3 reminders add Soon Gym --due-date "monday 7am" --repeat-on mon,wed,fri reminders add Soon Stand-up --due-date "monday 9am" --repeat weekly --repeat-on weekdays reminders add Soon Swim --due-date "tuesday 6pm" --repeat-on tue,thu --repeat-interval 2 ``` - `--repeat` accepts `daily`, `weekly`, `monthly`, or `yearly`. EventKit reminders have no hourly recurrence frequency, so `--repeat hourly` is rejected with an explanation rather than silently degrading to daily. - `--repeat-interval` repeats every N units instead of every 1 (e.g. `--repeat-interval 2 --repeat weekly` for every other week) and defaults to 1. - `--repeat-until` stops the recurrence after a date; omitting it repeats forever, matching the Reminders.app default. A date without a time includes the whole local day. - `--repeat-on` picks the days a weekly repeat fires on: a comma-separated list of day names, full (`monday`) or three-letter (`mon`), case-insensitive, or the aliases `weekdays` (Monday to Friday) and `weekends` (Saturday and Sunday). Duplicates are ignored and unknown names are rejected with the accepted spellings. It only applies to weekly repeats: on `add` it implies `--repeat weekly` and is rejected together with `daily`, `monthly`, or `yearly`. - On `add`, `--repeat-interval` and `--repeat-until` require `--repeat` or `--repeat-on`, and a repeating reminder requires `--due-date`. Both fail on a reminder whose repeat isn't weekly, unless combined with `--repeat weekly`. - Changing the frequency preserves the existing end condition but resets its interval to 1 unless `--repeat-interval` is supplied. - An end-only edit copies the complete EventKit rule so provider-specific calendar metadata is preserved as well. - Plain output shows the days as `(repeats: weekly on Mon, Wed, Fri)`. - JSON output includes `recurrence`, `recurrenceInterval`, `recurrenceDays` (lowercase three-letter names in Sunday-first order, e.g. `["mon","wed","fri"]`, omitted when the rule has no days), and either `recurrenceEnd` or `recurrenceCount` (when an existing rule is count-based) for repeating reminders, plus a `hasRecurrence` boolean on every reminder (so scripts can check it without testing for a missing or `null` field) and, where computable, a `nextDueDate`. **Known behavior:** EventKit does not advance a repeating reminder's due date as occurrences pass. - Once the due date is in the past, `dueDate`/`dueDateComponents` stay at whatever they were last set to (observed directly against Reminders.app; this isn't otherwise documented by Apple), and the reminder can end up showing arbitrarily overdue instead of jumping to the next occurrence. - Use the `nextDueDate` JSON field if you need the next actionable occurrence instead. This CLI computes it by stepping the rule's frequency/interval forward from `dueDate` to the first occurrence **at or after the current time**, respecting `--repeat-until`/occurrence-count ends: - While the due date is still ahead, `nextDueDate` equals `dueDate`. - For an overdue reminder, every missed occurrence is skipped. It is not `dueDate` plus one interval. A reminder repeating every 2 weeks with `dueDate` 2025-10-25 reports `nextDueDate` 2026-09-26 when read on 2026-09-14. - An occurrence earlier today counts as missed. For an all-day reminder the occurrence is at midnight, so a daily all-day reminder due today already reports tomorrow. - It is the date completing the reminder moves it to (observed with both `reminders complete` and Reminders.app). - Completing a repeating reminder moves it to that next occurrence and leaves a completed copy without a repeat rule. A completed reminder that still has a rule has run out of occurrences, so it has no `nextDueDate`. - It's only populated for the rules this CLI itself creates and edits: plain daily/weekly/monthly/yearly (+ interval) rules and weekly rules on days (`--repeat-on`), where the interval counts weeks from the due date's week. A date without a time includes the whole local day for `--due-before` (matching the `--repeat-until` behavior above), while `--due-after` uses the parsed date's own start as an inclusive lower bound. - `--overdue` is independent of, and combinable with, `--due-date`/`--include-overdue`. - `--no-due-date` cannot be combined with `--due-date`, `--due-before`, `--due-after`, `--overdue`, or `--include-overdue`, since those all require a due date to compare against. - `--completed-since` accepts the same natural-language dates as `--due-date`/`--due-after`, uses an inclusive lower bound against each reminder's completion time, and requires `--only-completed` or `--include-completed`, since there's nothing to filter otherwise. - `--flagged` shows only reminders flagged in Reminders.app. Plain output marks them with a `(flagged)` suffix, and JSON output has an `isFlagged` boolean on every reminder. - The flagged state is **read-only**: the CLI can't set or clear it yet ([#63](https://github.com/udondan/reminders-cli/issues/63)). - EventKit has no public flag property, so the CLI reads it through undocumented EventKit internals ([#51](https://github.com/udondan/reminders-cli/issues/51)). If a macOS version doesn't expose them, every reminder reads as not flagged instead of failing. ### Sort reminders `show` and `show-all` support `--sort`, one of `none` (default), `creation-date`, `due-date`, or `priority`, and `--sort-order`, one of `ascending` (default) or `descending`. It never asks for access itself. ```console $ reminders doctor OK Version: reminders-cli 3.3.0 OK macOS: 15.4 (24E248) OK Binary: /opt/homebrew/bin/reminders (arm64) OK Parent process: Terminal.app FAIL Reminders access: Denied Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Reminders and enable access for Terminal.app (the app that launched this command). Then re-run. OK Access request API: requestFullAccessToReminders (macOS 14+) $ echo $? 1 ``` Access is granted per app, so the parent process line names the app that has to be allowed (for example Terminal, iTerm or Visual Studio Code). With full access, `doctor` also lists the accounts holding reminder lists, the default list, and the number of lists and open reminders. Checks marked `WARN` (no lists, no default list) don't affect the exit status. `reminders doctor` exits `0` when no check failed and `1` otherwise, so it can serve as a health check in scripts. With `--format json` it prints one object with the same information and a `problems` array of `{code, severity, message, suggestion}` objects, which is empty when everything is fine: ```console $ reminders doctor --format json { "accessRequestAPI" : "requestFullAccessToReminders", "architecture" : "arm64", "authorization" : "denied", "binary" : "\/opt\/homebrew\/bin\/reminders", "macOS" : "15.4", "parentProcess" : "Terminal", "problems" : [ { "code" : "access_denied", "message" : "Reminders access was denied", "severity" : "fail", "suggestion" : "Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Reminders and enable access for Terminal.app (the app that launched this command). Then re-run." } ], "version" : "3.3.0" } ``` `authorization` is one of `fullAccess`, `writeOnly`, `denied`, `restricted`, `notDetermined` or `unknown`. `sources`, `defaultList`, `listCount` and `openReminderCount` are only present with full access. ## Errors Errors are always written to **stderr**, never to stdout, so `reminders ... --format json | jq` only ever sees JSON on stdout. Every error carries a stable, machine-readable code and its own exit status, so scripts can branch on `$?` or on the code without parsing English text. Without `--format json`, an error is one or two human-readable lines: ```console $ reminders show Grocery Error: No reminders list matching 'Grocery' Suggestion: Run 'reminders show-lists' to see available lists and their IDs $ echo $? 2 ``` With `--format json`, the same error is a single JSON object on stderr. The `suggestion` key is omitted when there is nothing to suggest: ```console $ reminders show Grocery --format json {"error":{"code":"list_not_found","message":"No reminders list matching 'Grocery'","suggestion":"Run 'reminders show-lists' to see available lists and their IDs"}} ``` The codes and exit statuses are a stable contract; the `message` and `suggestion` text may change between releases. | Exit status | Code | Meaning | | ----------- | ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | `2` | `list_not_found` | No list matches the name, fragment, or ID, or there is no default list | | `3` | `list_ambiguous` | A list name fragment matches several lists, or several lists share a name | | `4` | `reminder_not_found` | No reminder with the given ID or ID prefix on the given list | | `5` | `reminder_ambiguous` | A reminder ID prefix matches several reminders on the list | | `6` | `no_due_date` | `postpone --next-weekday` on a reminder without a due date | | `7` | `no_sources` | `new-list` found no account that can hold reminder lists | | `8` | `source_not_found` | `new-list --source` named an account that has no reminder lists | | `9` | `source_ambiguous` | `new-list` without `--source` when several accounts hold lists | | `10` | `save_failed` | EventKit refused to save or delete | | `11` | `access_denied` | Reminders access was not granted to the terminal | | `12` | `invalid_argument` | Invalid arguments, e.g. a repeat ending early, or `delete-list` on the default or a read-only list | | `13` | `confirmation_required` | `delete-list` without `--confirm`; nothing was deleted | Exit status `1` is reserved for unexpected errors that don't fit any code.
