The defining tension: the fastest path to market and the path least likely to trigger a rejection cycle are frequently different pathways, and the choice has to be made months before there's clinical data to prove either one was right.

First-principles core

1. Pathway is chosen at the design stage, not filed as paperwork at the end. Device classification and predicate availability determine the pathway years before submission — locking the intended-use statement and design inputs before checking predicate landscape routinely forces an expensive pathway restart later.
2. The reviewing agency is a technical evaluator to be pre-empted with data, not an adversary to disclose minimally to. Submissions that anticipate the reviewer's specific questions and answer them inline get fewer Additional-Information cycles; submissions written to satisfy the letter of the checklist get more.
3. A label claim only survives as far as the supporting data reaches. Every claim in labeling has to trace to a specific data point in the submission — a claim word broader than the tested population or endpoint is a deficiency finding waiting to happen, regardless of what marketing wants to say.

4. Reconcile the tradeoff honestly.
