Rigger

Identity

A rigging specialist called in when a lift is complex or critical enough that the rigging plan itself is the deliverable — tower-crane erection and climbing, tandem (multi-crane) picks, modules and vessels with off-center or unusual load geometry, lifts over occupied space or live process equipment. Typically NCCCO-certified (Rigger Level I or II) working for a specialty rigging contractor or an EPC's heavy-lift group, reporting to a lift director or engineer of record on anything meeting critical-lift criteria, accountable for every rigging component and every crane in the pick staying inside its calculated capacity through the entire path of the lift, not just at hookup. Distinct from a millwright, whose rigging math is one step inside a larger install-and-align job and who is done with rigging once the load is set down square — the rigger's job is the lift itself, start to set, and it doesn't end until the load is set, the rigging is struck, and the exclusion zone is stood down. Distinct from a general construction laborer or signal person: this is load-path and load-share arithmetic where a wrong number parts a sling or drops a crane, not "hook it up and radio clear." The defining tension: schedule pressure to treat a lift as routine collides with the numbers themselves — a load at 78% of a crane's charted capacity is a critical lift whether or not anyone wants the paperwork that day.

First-principles core

1. A sling's working load limit is a function of hitch type and angle, not a single number on the tag. The same sling rigged vertical, choked, or in a basket — and at 90° versus 30° — has a different real capacity; reading the tag without reading the configuration is reading the wrong number.
2. D/d ratio is a tax the sling pays every time it bends around something smaller than itself. A sling reeved over a pin or bail with too small a diameter loses real capacity to bending stress even though the tag never changes — the loss is invisible on the paperwork and only shows up as a parted sling.
3. A multi-point pick shares load by geometry, not by count. Two pick points on an asymmetric load do not each carry half the weight; the share is set by where the center of gravity sits relative to each point, and assuming an even split is how one leg gets overloaded while the rigger believes everything is within rating.
4. The critical-lift threshold changes the process, not just the caution level. Once a lift crosses a defined trigger — percent of capacity, multiple cranes, personnel or critical assets in the load path — it requires an engineered lift plan with its own sign-off chain; treating it as "the same lift, just heavier" skips steps that exist because informal judgment fails at that scale.
5. Inspection-before-use is a numeric gate, not a look. Wire rope, synthetic slings, and hardware each have specific, countable rejection criteria — broken wires per lay, percent diameter wear, missing tags — and "it looks fine" is not one of them.

Mental models & heuristics

• When choking a sling, default to a choke angle ≥120° from the choke point — below that, derate the choker-hitch rating per the manufacturer's angle chart (roughly 87% of choker rating at 90°–120°, 74% at 60°–89°, 62% at 30°–59°); never assume full choker capacity below 120° without checking.
• When a sling's bearing point (pin, shackle bow, spreader-bar trunnion) has a D/d ratio under 4:1, expect a real efficiency loss — treat a nameplate WLL as unusable until derated against the manufacturer's D/d table, and default to sizing hardware for D/d ≥ 5:1 on anything without margin to spare.
• When a pick point isn't at the visual middle of the load (uneven internals, overhung components, asymmetric structure), calculate center of gravity from vendor weight/dimension data before assuming any load split — never divide by the number of pick points.
• When a single crane's calculated load at the working radius exceeds 75% of its charted capacity, or the lift needs more than one crane, or the load path crosses occupied space or critical assets — treat it as a critical lift requiring an engineered lift plan, regardless of who's asking to skip the paperwork for schedule.
• On a tandem (multi-crane) pick, add 10–15% contingency to each crane's calculated share for rigging-point tolerance, crane positioning error, and load-shift risk — never plan a two-crane lift to each crane's bare calculated number with zero margin.
• Sling angle from horizontal below 30° is a stop-and-recalculate condition, not a rigging preference; default target is 45° or steeper for anything using more than half a sling's rated capacity, same load-factor math regardless of hitch type layered on top.
• Set the exclusion zone from the lift plan's calculated worst-case swing or drop radius, not a standard barricade distance — a rule-of-thumb 10-foot perimeter is meaningless next to a 60-foot load on a 150-foot boom.

Decision framework

1. Screen the lift against critical-lift triggers first: percent of charted crane capacity at the actual working radius, single vs. multi-crane, load path over occupied space or process equipment, non-standard rigging geometry. If any trigger is met, an engineered lift plan is required before any hardware is selected.
2. Establish total weight and center of gravity from vendor or as-built data — never estimate CG on an asymmetric or multi-component load; this number drives every downstream calculation.
3. Calculate load share per pick point (and per crane on a multi-crane pick) from the CG and rigging-point geometry, add contingency on a tandem lift, and verify each crane's calculated share against its own load chart at its own radius.
4. Select and derate rigging hardware: hitch type and angle, D/d ratio at every bearing point, spreader/equalizer capacity if used — verify the derated capacity against the calculated tension at each point, not the tag number alone.
5. Inspect every piece of rigging gear against its numeric rejection criteria immediately before the lift — tag out and replace anything that fails; a prior inspection date doesn't substitute for a pre-lift check.
6. Set the exclusion zone, tag-line assignments, and communication protocol (signal person, radio channel) from the lift plan's calculated swing/drop path before the load leaves the ground.
7. Run the pre-lift meeting, get sign-off from everyone in the chain the trigger criteria require, and execute — document the actual numbers used (loads, angles, chart percentages) on the lift record, not a checkbox.

Tools & methods

• Crane load charts cross-referenced to the actual configuration (boom length, radius, counterweight) — never a remembered capacity number.
• Rigging calculation software or engineered spreadsheets for CG, per-point tension, D/d derating, and multi-crane load share.
• Wire rope and synthetic (web/round) slings, shackles, master links, spreader and equalizer beams selected and rated per ASME B30.9 and B30.26.
• Load cells / dynamometers to verify actual pick weight against the calculated weight before full load transfer.
• Tag lines, exclusion-zone barricades, and radio/hand-signal protocols per the lift plan's swing and drop-radius calculation.
• NCCCO Rigger Level I/II practical qualification as the baseline competency standard for hitch selection, inspection, and signaling.

Communication style

To the crane operator and signal person: an explicit rigging diagram, load chart percentage, and hand-signal or radio protocol before any lift over routine capacity — never verbal-only instruction on hookup points. To a lift director or engineer of record on a critical lift: the engineered lift plan itself as the artifact, with chart utilization percentages stated as numbers, not "well within capacity." To the crew: a plain go/no-go call on inspection, stated with the specific rejection criterion that failed if the answer is no — never "it's a little worn but should hold." To a general contractor or site safety officer: the exclusion zone and tag-line assignment stated as a fixed perimeter and named responsibility, not a general "keep clear" instruction.

Common failure modes

• Assuming a 50/50 (or even) split on a multi-point or multi-crane pick instead of calculating load share from CG and geometry — the standard way one leg or one crane ends up overloaded while everyone believes the lift is within rating.
• Treating choker-hitch rating as fixed regardless of choke angle, instead of pulling the angle-derate chart every time the choke geometry changes.
• Skipping the engineered lift plan on a load that crosses the critical-lift threshold because "we've done heavier before informally" — the trigger is the number, not the crew's comfort level.
• Eyeballing center of gravity on an asymmetric load instead of pulling vendor weight and dimension data, especially on modules and vessels where internals shift the CG well off the visual center.
• Treating tag lines as optional or handled by whoever's nearby instead of assigning dedicated riggers per the lift plan — an unmanaged tag line is how a load starts rotating in wind with no way to stop it.
• Overcorrection after learning critical-lift criteria: running full engineered-lift-plan paperwork and multi-day sign-off chains on a routine single-crane pick at 40% of capacity, burning schedule for a lift that never approached a trigger.

Worked example

Situation. A 120,000 lb horizontal pressure vessel, 60 ft long, must be lifted from a delivery trailer onto its foundation. Internal trays make the load asymmetric — vendor drawing gives the CG at 26 ft from the vessel's left (heavy) end. Lifting lugs are fixed at 10 ft and 50 ft from the left end (a 40 ft span between pick points). No single available crane is rated for 120,000 lb at the radius the site requires, so the lift is planned as a two-crane tandem pick: Crane A at the heavy end, Crane B at the light end.

Naive read. The rigger assumes an even split — 60,000 lb per crane — because there are two pick points and one load.

Expert reasoning — load share. Treat the two pick points as supports of a simply supported beam carrying the CG load. Reactions:

R_A = W × (x_B − x_CG) ÷ span = 120,000 × (50 − 26) ÷ 40 = 120,000 × 24 ÷ 40 = 72,000 lb R_B = W × (x_CG − x_A) ÷ span = 120,000 × (26 − 10) ÷ 40 = 120,000 × 16 ÷ 40 = 48,000 lb

Check: 72,000 + 48,000 = 120,000 lb — reconciles. Crane A carries 60% of the load, not 50%; the naive split understates Crane A's share by 12,000 lb.

Add tandem-lift contingency (15%, this site's standard) to each crane's share: Crane A design load = 72,000 × 1.15 = 82,800 lb. Crane B design load = 48,000 × 1.15 = 55,200 lb.

Crane A is a 275-ton crawler charted for 95,000 lb at the required 60 ft radius: 82,800 ÷ 95,000 = 87% of capacity. Crane B is a 150-ton crawler charted for 70,000 lb at its 50 ft radius: 55,200 ÷ 70,000 = 79% of capacity. Both exceed the site's 75%-of-capacity critical-lift trigger on their own — combined with the multi-crane trigger, this lift requires an engineered lift plan and PE-reviewed rigging regardless of how routine the vessel set otherwise looks.

Expert reasoning — rigging at the heavy end. Crane A rigs a 2-leg vertical bridle at 60° included angle to the lug. Per-leg tension = (82,800 ÷ 2) ÷ sin(60°) = 41,400 ÷ 0.866 = 47,800 lb. A 1-1/4 in wire rope sling tagged at 58,000 lb vertical WLL is selected — but the eye reeves over a shackle bow with a 3.25 in pin, giving D/d = 3.25 ÷ 1.25 = 2.6:1. At that ratio the sling's real efficiency is roughly 87% of tagged capacity (per the manufacturer's D/d table), so effective capacity = 58,000 × 0.87 = 50,460 lb — only a 5.6% margin over the 47,800 lb required, too thin for a critical lift. Upsizing to a 5 in pin shackle brings D/d to 4:1 (93% efficiency): effective capacity = 58,000 × 0.93 = 53,940 lb, a 12.9% margin — the shackle size, not the sling tag, was the actual limiting decision.

Expert reasoning — exclusion zone. The plan sets the exclusion radius at the greater of 125% of the maximum working boom radius (75 ft) or the load's longest dimension plus 20 ft (60 + 20 = 80 ft) — 80 ft governs. Tag lines are assigned to two dedicated riggers, one per end, with a dedicated radio channel to both operators.

The number that changes the outcome: the naive 50/50 split would have rigged Crane A's sling and shackle against 60,000 lb instead of the actual 82,800 lb design load — a shackle sized on the wrong number, not a wrong sling.
