ARCS Motivation Model
ARCS model: Attention (grab) + Relevance (connect to learner) + Confidence (success expectation) + Satisfaction (reward). Motivate at each stage.
Each ARCS component
- Attention: capture interest at start
- Surprise, novelty, question, story
- Relevance: why does this matter to learner?
- Goal connection, prior experience, real application
- Confidence: 'I can do this'
- Clear objectives, manageable steps, scaffolded difficulty
- Satisfaction: reward at end
- Tangible application, recognition, achievement
Applying ARCS to lessons
Per lesson:
- Attention (opening): hook with question or story (30 sec)
- Relevance (early): connect to learner's situation (1-2 min)
- Content (main): teach (5-15 min)
- Practice (active): apply what learned (3-10 min)
- Reflection (closing): connect back to goal (1-2 min)
Confidence building tactics
- Small wins early — first lesson achievable
- Clear objectives — what they'll know at end
- Self-paced — go at own speed
- Reset opportunities — retake quizzes, replay lessons
- Peer support — community for encouragement
- Instructor encouragement — celebrate progress
- Optional difficulty — challenge for advanced
