Inclusive Design Principles
Accessibility is the floor. Inclusion is the ceiling.
Microsoft's inclusive design principles
Recognize exclusion (everyone is sometimes excluded). Solve for one, extend to many (curb cuts help wheelchairs AND parents AND skateboarders). Learn from diversity.
Research with underrepresented users
Don't recruit only convenient samples. Pay users from disability communities, racial / gender minorities, non-English speakers.
Design for different abilities
Color blindness (8% of men). Low vision (5% of population). Motor disabilities. Cognitive load.
Voice + tone
Avoid idioms that exclude non-native speakers. Avoid jargon. Plain language helps everyone.
Common mistakes
Designing for self / team. 'Edge case' framing for >5% of users. Accessibility consultation only at end. No paid disability research.
