Class 3 is the most common hazmat. Flash point ≤ 140°F. Most truck drivers handle some Class 3.
Gasoline (UN1203, PG II). Ethanol (UN1170, PG II). Diesel fuel (regulated under specific conditions; UN1202, PG III). Acetone (UN1090, PG II). Paint (UN1263 with subdivisions).
Cargo tanks (DOT-406) for petroleum + flammable liquid bulk. Specifications strict — tank certification, hydrostatic testing, vapor recovery.
55-gallon drums most common. Quantity per package determines packaging requirements. Total per shipment determines placarding.
Bulk Class 3 = always placarded. Non-bulk Class 3 = placarded if aggregate ≥ 1,001 lbs.
Spilling/dispensing requires bonding/grounding (prevent static fire). PPE mandatory. No smoking within 25 feet.
Many tunnels prohibit Class 3 bulk. Check tunnel-by-tunnel.
