Packing Groups I Ii Iii
Packing Group (PG) reflects degree of danger. PG I = highest. PG III = lowest. Affects packaging strength, quantity limits, and labeling.
PG I — Great danger
Most strict packaging. Lowest quantity limits per shipment. Examples: hydrazine, fuming nitric acid.
PG II — Medium danger
Strong packaging. Standard quantity limits. Most common PG (acetone, sulfuric acid, gasoline-type materials).
PG III — Minor danger
Less strict packaging. Higher quantity limits before bulk requirements kick in. Examples: kerosene, diesel fuel (when offered as hazmat).
Determining PG
Tied to physical properties: flash point (flammables), toxicity (Class 6.1), corrosivity. Specified in 49 CFR 173 for each class.
Why it matters at roadside
Inspector verifies PG → packaging code → labels match. PG II load in PG III packaging is a violation.
