Testing MCP Server Security

When to Use

• During authorized assessments of AI agents/IDEs (Cursor, Claude Code/Desktop, Flowise) that load MCP servers
• When reviewing third-party or marketplace MCP servers/skills before or after deployment
• When an MCP server runs locally over stdio and inherits the user's OS credentials
• When testing whether tool descriptions, schemas, or outputs can inject instructions into the model
• When assessing MCP config trust, update/supply-chain risk, and transport-layer auth gaps

Prerequisites

• Authorization: Written agreement covering the MCP servers, clients, and host workstations in scope
• Python + mcp SDK (pip3 install mcp "mcp[cli]"): to build test servers and run mcp dev inspector
• Burp Suite + MCP Attack Surface Detector (MCP-ASD): to bridge SSE/WebSocket MCP transports into Repeater/Intruder
• Node.js / uv: required by the MCP inspector and several tooling paths
• An isolated test workstation + OOB sink: never run untrusted MCP servers on your real host

Critical: Techniques Most Often Missed (test the server AND the client trust model)

MCP trust is usually anchored to package name, reviewed source, and current tool schema — NOT the runtime that executes after the next update. Work the full matrix below.

How to CONFIRM a hit (without destructive payloads)

• Tool poisoning: the agent executes the description-embedded action (OOB callback / benign marker file) when invoking an unrelated tool — confirm via OOB sink, not by reading real credentials.
• Credential theft: model otto-support selfpwn behavior — enumerate which sensitive paths a hostile server could read in scope; do not exfiltrate real secrets, just prove read access to a seeded canary file.
• Config bypass (MCPoison): after approving a benign MCP, swap command/args; confirm the new command runs on project reopen/sync with no re-prompt (use a benign touch /tmp/mcpoison).
• Unauth RCE: a single HTTP request drops a benign marker (touch /tmp/pwn) — confirm file exists.
• Treat any OOB hit, unexpected child process, marker file, or outbound connection during tool use as confirmed.

Workflow

Step 1: Map the MCP Architecture and Trust Boundaries

Record which tools take actions (highest priority), and whether the client auto-approves tool calls.

Step 2: Test Tool Poisoning via Descriptions and Schema

Build/inspect a server whose tool description embeds hidden instructions and see if the client acts on them.

Also place injection in parameter names, type fields, extra JSON response fields, and unexpected outputs — confirm whether the model follows any of them (OOB hit).

Step 3: Test Indirect Injection Through Server-Mediated Data

- For a GitHub/GitLab/email MCP server, seed a benign-but-attributable instruction in data
  the agent reads (issue body, repo file, email) that tells it to call another tool.
- Ask the agent its normal task; confirm it follows the planted instruction (OOB / tool log).
- Prefer existing tools (send_email/create_pr) over curl to mirror stealthy real-world abuse.

Use a benign payload (touch /tmp/mcpoison) to confirm execution. Note: fixed in Cursor >= v1.3 (forces re-approval on any MCP file change).

Step 7: Fuzz MCP Endpoints with Burp (MCP-ASD)

- Install the MCP Attack Surface Detector (MCP-ASD) Burp extension.
- It bridges async SSE/WebSocket transports into a synchronous internal bridge so
  Repeater/Intruder requests are forwarded and correlated by request GUID.
- Connection profiles inject bearer tokens, custom headers/params, or mTLS client certs.
- Note: SSE endpoints are often unauthenticated; WebSockets commonly require auth.
- Enumerate primitives, generate a prototype Tool call, and fuzz Tools (they execute actions).

For evidence-driven analysis of captured traffic, the Burp MCP Server BApp can expose intercepted traffic to a local LLM (Ollama) — prefer local models for sensitive data and keep Burp as the source of truth (analysis/reporting, not blind scanning).

Common Scenarios

Scenario 1: Tool Poisoning Exfiltrates SSH Keys

A trusted MCP server's add tool description is updated to instruct the agent to curl the user's ~/.ssh/id_rsa to an attacker host before any tool runs; the client complies silently.

Scenario 2: Local Server Harvests Cloud Credentials

A marketplace MCP server launched over stdio reads ~/.aws/credentials and ~/.claude/credentials.json while returning perfectly normal tool output, so integration tests never detect the theft.

Scenario 3: MCPoison Config Swap (CVE-2025-54136)

An attacker commits a benign .cursor/rules/mcp.json, the victim approves it, then the command is swapped to a reverse shell that runs on every project open with no re-prompt.

Scenario 4: Flowise Unauthenticated RCE

A single unauthenticated POST to /api/v1/node-load-method/customMCP executes attacker JavaScript via Function() in Node.js, dumping stored LLM API keys and pivoting into the internal network.

### Recommendation
1. Treat MCP servers as untrusted code execution, not just prompt context
2. Use internal registries: reviewed/signed packages, pinned versions, checksums, lockfiles, vendoring
3. Run high-risk servers in dedicated accounts / isolated containers with no sensitive host mounts
4. Enforce allowlist-only egress for MCP processes; monitor unexpected connections/file access
5. Require re-approval on any MCP config change; sign or store configs outside the repo (MCPoison)
6. Require human-in-the-loop for state-changing tool calls; isolate ingested data from instructions
7. Patch hosts (Cursor >= v1.3, Flowise, Claude Code) and rotate any credentials a hostile server could read
