A quick way to begin developing a plan for effectively engaging a stakeholder.
Recognizing stakeholders needs, wants, and influence will help you better navigate your effort towards success.
When you need to interact or collaborate with the people involved, interested, or impacted by your project.
Stakeholder Motivations vs. Your Motivations — The canvas deliberately separates what the stakeholder needs and wants from what you need from them, exposing misalignment before it derails engagement. Mapping both sides prevents one-directional persuasion that ignores the stakeholder's actual interests.
Equity Lens — An embedded prompt to consider access, power imbalances, and historically excluded voices when planning engagement. It forces teams past their default stakeholder set toward those impacted but rarely consulted.
Proxy — A representative who speaks for or stands in for a stakeholder who is unavailable, hard to reach, or represents a group. Identifying a credible proxy keeps engagement moving without misrepresenting the actual stakeholder's interests.
Analysis vs. Engagement Sides — The canvas is two-phased: Analysis assesses who the stakeholder is and what drives them; Engagement converts that understanding into a concrete action plan. Skipping Analysis produces engagement tactics with no diagnostic foundation.
Decide Box (Next Action) — The closing commitment that names owner, action, medium, timing, key message, and desired outcome for the next touchpoint. It turns reflection into an accountable, scheduled engagement rather than vague intent.
Influence and Impact — The degree to which a stakeholder can affect your effort's success and the degree to which your effort affects them. Distinguishing the two prevents over-investing in loud-but-low-influence voices while neglecting quietly powerful ones.
