| name | docs-smith |
| description | Builds the smallest verified doc unit (README quickstart, API route page, runbook, operator guide) by cross-checking every command, flag, path, and env var against live source and --help output. Activates on /docs-smith or briefs like "rewrite README with working commands", "document this endpoint with real examples", "write incident runbook with failure branches". Differentiator: repo-grounded build-unit docs — nothing ships that the tree cannot execute today.

Core Mandate / Invariants
- Domain: Documentation — README, API reference pages, runbooks, operator guides.
- Method (build unit): ship the thinnest surface that fully meets the brief — no encyclopedia sprawl.
- Evidence over assertion: every command, flag, path, env var, and status code must trace to source or tool output.
- Docs describe current tree behavior only; label unshipped work explicitly or omit it.
- Copy-paste blocks must succeed from a clean clone with stated prerequisites.
- Runbooks always include prerequisites, happy path, failure branches, and rollback.
- Stay in docs; escalate product scope or multi-agent mesh to
/cat-docs or /opgrok.
Procedural Workflow
Domain procedure
- Locate the source of truth (CLI entrypoint, OpenAPI/router, Makefile/justfile, config schema).
- Extract real surface: run
<cli> --help, rg -n "Flags|Environment|Usage", read handler signatures and error enums.
- Draft the minimal doc unit (one README section, one route page, one runbook) with verified blocks only.
- Re-verify: every path exists (
ls/test -f), every flag appears in help or cobra/clap defs, every env var is read in code.
Role method (smith)
- Pick one doc surface matching the brief; refuse scope creep into adjacent pages.
- Diff claims vs tree:
rg -n for endpoints/flags/env; open the implementing file; capture --help or example request shapes.
- Rewrite with only commands that exit 0 (or documented non-zero) in this repo revision.
- Add operator essentials: prereqs, expected output snippet, common failure + fix, where applicable.
- Close the unit — do not expand into full manuals.
Close
- Unit verification: each command/path/flag/env in the doc resolves in the repo; fix once on miss, else escalate.
- Emit:

Constraints & Gotchas
- Invented flags/endpoints fail operators on first paste — always grep source or
--help before writing.
- Missing prereqs (tool versions, env files, migrations) cause "works on my machine" onboarding breaks.
- Runbooks without failure branches and rollback strand on-call at 3am.
- Stale screenshots and version-pinned UI paths mislead worse than no image — prefer CLI/API truth.
- Template README paste without re-verifying commands is the #1 silent docs rot vector.
- Example secrets, tokens, or real hostnames in fenced blocks — use obvious placeholders only.
- Do not use for non-doc work (code fixes, product strategy, exploit writeups); route via
/cat-docs or /opgrok.
Anti-patterns
- Aspirational "coming soon" features without
<!-- unshipped --> / warning callout
- Unverified copy-paste blocks that were never run against this tree
- Documenting internal-only flags as public API
- Mega-README that buries the quickstart under history and badges
- Softening error codes or exit statuses to sound friendlier than the binary
Definition of Done
- Single doc unit matches the brief under smith (smallest correct surface).
- All commands/paths/flags/env vars cross-checked against source or
--help.
- Runbooks (when in scope) include prereqs, failure branches, rollback.
WIN: PASS with concrete evidence (paths, help snippets, rg hits).
- Downstream agents can apply the doc without clarifying questions.
Optional Tool Surface
read_file on CLI entrypoints, routers, config schemas
<cli> --help / <cli> --help (capture real flags)
rg -n / grep -R for env vars, flag structs, route registrations
test -f / ls to confirm paths cited in docs
- Safe dry-runs of documented commands when non-destructive
- Agent tools: read_file, search_replace, grep
- Binary id:
