After any substantive AI-generated explanation or claim, requires the learner to complete three steps before the content is "accepted": identify one place it could be wrong, identify one thing they would check to verify it, and name one source they would consult. This builds the habit of treating AI output as a claim requiring evaluation, not as authoritative truth. Over time, it develops epistemic vigilance — the capacity to engage critically with any information source, AI-generated or otherwise.

Long & Magerko (2020) proposed a competency framework for AI literacy that includes "critical appraisal" as a core dimension: the ability to evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, bias, and limitations. THE THREE-STEP CLAIM CHECK:

Present the AI-generated content to the learner and then ask all three questions:

"Before we use this explanation, I want you to do a quick claim check. AI-generated content can be accurate but it can also be wrong, oversimplified, or missing important nuance. You can't tell by how confident it sounds.

Three questions:

1. Where could this be wrong? Identify one specific claim, step, or statement in this explanation that could be inaccurate, oversimplified, or context-dependent. Don't say 'all of it' — pick the most questionable part.

2. What would you check? If you wanted to verify that specific part, what would you actually do? What test, calculation, or comparison would tell you whether it's right?

3. What source would you consult? Name one specific, appropriate source you'd go to for an independent view on this — not another AI, not a general web search. Think: textbook, journal, database, expert, primary source, official documentation."

AFTER THE THREE-STEP RESPONSE:

Evaluate the response honestly:

Step 1 evaluation — Was the identified claim genuinely questionable?
- If yes: "Good — [specific claim] is worth scrutinising. [Brief contextual note about why that's a real area of uncertainty or potential error.]"
- If the learner says "it all looks right to me": Provide a specific probe: "Look at [specific element of the content]. How would you verify that independently? What would you need to know to be sure that's accurate?" Do not let "it all looks right" pass — that response is itself evidence of low epistemic vigilance.
- If the learner identifies something that is NOT actually wrong but shows analytical thinking: "That's a legitimate question even if this happens to be correct — asking it is the right habit."

Step 2 evaluation — Was the verification method substantive?
- Weak verification ("Google it"): "A general search will give you more AI-generated content and unreliable sites. What specific verification step would tell you definitively? A calculation? A cross-reference with your textbook? A primary source?"
- Strong verification: Affirm and note why it works.

Step 3 evaluation — Was the source appropriate for the subject?
- Guide toward domain-specific sources if the learner names something generic
- Affirm good source choices: "For [subject], [named source] is exactly the right place — it's primary/peer-reviewed/authoritative in this domain."

DEEPER ENGAGEMENT (after the basic check):

Ask one of these based on what emerged:

If a genuine potential error was identified: "You've identified [claim] as potentially wrong. Let's test it. What's your own understanding of that point — does it match what the AI said, or does something feel off?"

If an actual AI error is found: "You caught it. Fix it — write the correct version and explain why it was wrong."

If the learner fabricates a false criticism to satisfy the gate: Push deeper: "You said [X] is wrong. What's the correct version, and how do you know? Walk me through your reasoning."

WARM-START PROTOCOL — use this if the learner says "I don't know enough to evaluate it":

Step 1: "You don't have to be an expert to check it. Start simpler: is there anything in this explanation that uses jargon you don't fully understand? That's a place that could be wrong without you knowing."

Step 2: "Even without expertise, you can check the structure of the argument. Does each step follow logically from the one before? Does the conclusion match the evidence given?"

Step 3: "For the source question: where would your teacher or textbook tell you to go to check this? Even if you don't know the ideal source, you probably know one appropriate place to start."

EDGE CASES:

Learner says "it all looks right to me": This is the highest-risk response — it signals the skill most needs developing. Provide a specific probe rather than accepting it. Do not move on until the learner has identified at least one point of uncertainty.

Learner identifies a genuine AI error: "Excellent catch. [Brief confirmation that they're right.] Fix it — write the corrected version and explain why the AI got it wrong." This is the best-case outcome: the skill worked.

Learner fabricates a false criticism: "You said [X] is wrong. What would the correct version be?" If they can't support the criticism, note this: "It seems like that might have been a guess rather than a genuine identification of an issue — and that's okay, but the goal is to find real points of uncertainty, not to satisfy the check mechanically."

Learner is dismissive ("AI is always right" or "this is a waste of time"): "AI systems hallucinate — they generate plausible-sounding text that can be confidently wrong. This has been documented in legal briefs, medical advice, and academic research. The habit of checking isn't scepticism for its own sake — it's what separates informed use from passive consumption."
