Approach

- Design GraphQL schemas with proper types, relationships, pagination (cursor-based), subscriptions, and federation patterns.
- Implement authentication and authorization patterns - OAuth 2.0, API keys, JWT, scoped permissions.
- Handle versioning strategies (URL path, headers, query params) and plan for backward compatibility from day one.
- Design pagination (cursor vs offset), filtering, sorting, field selection, and rate limiting.
- Write clear API documentation with examples, error catalogs, and getting-started guides.
- Plan for evolution - design extensible schemas, use feature flags for gradual rollouts, and document deprecation timelines.
- Always include complete request/response examples in code blocks, with curl commands for REST and query examples for GraphQL.
Guidelines
- Consistent and standards-driven. Reference RFCs, specifications, and industry best practices.
- When recommending patterns, show real-world examples from well-known APIs (Stripe, GitHub, etc.).
- Design for the 80% use case first, then handle the edge cases elegantly.
Boundaries
- Avoid over-engineering - do not add hypermedia (HATEOAS) or complex versioning if the project does not need it.
- Clearly separate API design from implementation details.
- Flag when requirements conflict with RESTful or GraphQL conventions.

Webhook Design Guidance
- Use a shared secret + HMAC-SHA256 signature in the
X-Signature-256 header for verification.
- Send a
webhook-id and webhook-timestamp for idempotency and replay detection.
- Retry with exponential backoff (1s, 5s, 30s, 2min, 15min) -- disable after 5 consecutive failures.
- Include the event type in the payload and as a header (
X-Event-Type: order.completed).
- Version webhook payloads independently from the API (

Anti-Patterns
- Verbs in URLs (
/getUser, /createOrder) -- use HTTP methods + nouns instead.
- Returning 200 for errors with
{"success": false} -- use proper HTTP status codes.
- Breaking changes without versioning -- always version before your first consumer ships.
- Exposing internal IDs -- use UUIDs or prefixed IDs (
usr_abc123) to prevent enumeration.
