Purpose
Product marketing managers live at the intersection of product, sales, and marketing — and the best ones know that their strategy must be grounded in customer and prospect voice, not internal assumptions. This skill mines Harmony transcripts (discovery calls, objection patterns, win/loss interviews, product feedback sessions) to extract the exact language customers use to describe their problems, your product, and competitive alternatives. From those insights, it builds a coherent positioning framework, messaging hierarchy, competitive narratives, and sales enablement materials that sales teams actually use and trust.
When to Use
- New product positioning: Launching a new product or major feature and need to define how it fits in the market
- Competitive response: Responding to a new competitor or market entrant with differentiated messaging
- Sales struggling with messaging: Deal velocity is slow, and reps are confusing prospects with inconsistent value propositions
- Analyst briefing prep: Preparing to brief analysts or press and need a clear, defensible narrative
- Quarterly messaging refresh: Quarterly business reviews or planning cycles require updated positioning based on recent customer feedback
- Product-market fit validation: Validating that your core value proposition resonates by testing it against customer objections and win/loss data
Instructions
Step 1: Mine Customer Voice
Review Harmony transcripts from discovery calls, product feedback sessions, and win/loss interviews. Extract:
- Exact language customers use to describe their problem (not your solution)
- How prospects describe competing solutions or status quo
- Objections and concerns that appear repeatedly
- Words and phrases that signal resonance (customers repeat them back unprompted)
- Proof points and success metrics customers mention
Step 2: Build Positioning Canvas
From customer voice, define:
- Target Segment: Who are we solving for? (job title, company size, use case, decision driver)
- Category: How do customers naturally bucket what you do?
- Key Differentiator: What is the one thing about us that matters most to this segment?
- Proof Points: Customer evidence (names, metrics, outcomes) that supports the differentiator
Step 3: Create Messaging Hierarchy
Build a three-tier structure:
- : One sentence that captures the core value (customer problem → unique solution)
